[SOLVED] Windows 10 20h2 no longer upates (missing partition?)

    Hi,

I've recently noticed that my Windows Home v20H2 19.042 repeatedly cycles in trying to install the 2021-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5003173) but after what seems to be two attempts to apply the update separated by restarts, it undoes any change and reverts to the previous situation. The Settings panel mentions the update error code 0x800f0922. Then tries again the day after (download/install/wait to restart).

Aside from this, once reverted, the PC runs fine. I have no errors with the "sfc /scannow" check.

For a bit of context that would likely be at the root of the situation, I did one month ago, with the helpful assistance of this forum, completely got rid of and free-up a HDD where the OS was initially installed on, after having moved the OS and EFI partitions to the SSD. I wonder if some required partition isn't missing (Recovery ? other system reserved ?) which was on the HDD formerly but got wiped.

    As complementary information:
    • The msconfig application shows nothing in the list of OS's under the boot tab
    • Running bcdedit /enum command returns following error message:
The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found.
    • When forcing the computer to enter the advanced startup mode, the displayed menu only shows "Power Off", and not the "usual" made of these "System Restore", "Startup Repair", "Command Prompt", "System Image Recovery", "Choose Another Operating System", etc...
    • Visual BCD editor won't even start (claiming to require admin credentials, while they are provided)

Am I right assuming a required partition is missing or do I not need it and would a configuration change suffice ?
Thanks for your precious advice !

This is what the Windows disk partition tool looks like now:
    Windows 10 20h2 no longer upates-image.png

And this is what MiniTool Partition Wizard shwos at start-up:
    Windows 10 20h2 no longer upates-image.png

Additionally, these are the info collected by DiskParInfo.bat : (don't know why it all appears on a single line despite the CR/LF characters are there !?)
    Code:
Disk 0 : HDD. It has 1 partition(s). Model: ST1000DX001-1CM162 Disk 1 : SSD. It has 3 partition(s). Model: CT500BX100SSD1 The script has found the above 2 storage device(s) in total.=======================================================================Microsoft DiskPart version Hi, most probably you have uninstalled Edge Chromium. You need to reinstall that to update.

A tenforums member very recently confirmed this,
    Windows 10 20H2-05 (KB5003173) Cumulative Update Error

and this is reflected in the note at the top of the News thread - the News section carries a thread per update per build

    KB5003173 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.985 and v20H2 19042.985

When forcing the computer to enter the advanced startup mode, the displayed menu only shows "Power Off", and not the "usual" made of these "System Restore", "Startup Repair", "Command Prompt", "System Image Recovery", "Choose Another Operating System", etc...
This is probably because of a problem with your Recovery partition as you mention.
    Please post the result of
    reagentc /info
    from an admin command prompt.

You seem to be missing this partition:
    Windows 10 20h2 no longer upates-1.png

To fix the partition problems, my personal approach would be the most routine:
    a. Image C: (I hope you're already using disk imaging) - to an external disk.
    b. Clean install Win 10 (deleting all partitions on the disk).
    c. Restore the image of C: in place of the new Windows partition
    d. Restart. Either automatic repair or if necessary Startup Repair using a Win 10 installation disk should sort things out.

Thanks Dalchina for the fast response. I'll answer the various elements separately:

    1) I didn't uninstall Edge Chromium and I'm actually using it from time to time. Here is its version:
    Windows 10 20h2 no longer upates-image.png
Besides, it looks that several issues produce the error code I reported. One of them (as reported on EaseUs's Backup tool support site) being a "too small partition", which sounds a closer issue to the system partition I would be missing.

    2) The reagentc /info output was provided in the clumsy code section of my original post. It says:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>reagentc /info
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration

    Information:

        Windows RE status: Disabled
        Windows RE location:
Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 1debaa11-46a9-11ea-97fc-b8aeed25f4c5
        Recovery image location:
        Recovery image index: 0
        Custom image location:
        Custom image index: 0

    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
    3) Missing Partition
Yes it looks like at least *one* partition is missing : The "System Reserved" but maybe also the "Recovery Partition" ? I'm not sure if comparing with your situation makes much sense : I'm running with to partitions, you're running with six ! I might therefore be missing *four* partitions !

Before trying the "routine" sequence you suggest, should i not try the Repair with the Win 10 installation disk (I guess after fetching the latest Win 10 installation media from Microsoft and putting it on a USB disk)?

Thanks again for our advice !

Thanks for confirming this is not related to Edge C.

I'm not sure if comparing with your situation makes much sense : I'm running with to partitions, you're running with six ! I might therefore be missing *four* partitions !
No, only 4 are used. The others are leftovers I've not bothered to tidy up. The first was an original Recovery partition - MS now places those AFTER C: on a new installation. Both the two 'extra's are unallocated if you notice.

I don't know that an in-place upgrade repair install would
    a. succeed in this instance
    b. create the missing partition

You can try it of course..

reagentc merely confirms what we already know, of course, so that was expected.

The procedure I suggested should provide the missing partition issues and fix your recovery partition problem, and your booting problems.

It might as you suggest fix your update error.

It may well also then fix your Visual BCD editor problem.

Hum... nope. Neither does it explain the situation I'm complaining about (the published code appears on a single line), nor did I find any corrective procedure. That "training" just explains the use of the toggle button between wysiwig and source modes.
Actually I seem to narrow down the issue to the use of "Preview", which seems to remove all the CR/LF. I'll check with another browser (using Brave here).

The following is the output of DiskParInfo.bat.
The output is not shown on a single line.
    Code:

        Disk 2 : USB. It has 1 partition(s). Model: Kingston DataTraveler 2.0

The script has found the above 3 storage device(s) in total.

Yes I think you have a point here. I guess I have no other choice...

The following is the output of DiskParInfo.bat.
The output is not shown on a single line.

    Code:
        Disk 0 : HDD. It has 5 partition(s). Model: ST500DM002-1BD142
        Disk 1 : USB. It has 2 partition(s). Model: PNY OU3 3.0
        Disk 2 : USB. It has 1 partition(s). Model: Kingston DataTraveler 2.0
Indeed it's nicely displayed in a box. Not when I'm doing it though.
Crazy enough, the your sentence in bold did only appear in my editor when I "quoted" it, but not in your original reply (!?)
