    Windows update missing from settings

    Afternoon

As the title states, the windows update feature is missing from the settings ‘update & security’ tab,I’ve tried everything i can fond via google, group policies, regedit and command prompt, but nothing works, laptop has been virus scanned and nothing found, searched on here too and still nothing works, have tried to do an update/rebuild via the media creation tool, but this constantly fails the installing windows part. I’m pretty sure it worked a few weeks ago, but not 100% sure though. Any other ideas/fixes to try please/

    Thanks Bree

Tried that, update shows up in settings, but nothing appears when you click on it, just the header words ‘windows update’ and some dots moving across the top of the window, left it running for 2 hours earlier and page still didn’t popularise.

That's an improvement, at least it appears now. And yes, I've occasionally seen it get stuck at those moving dots.

    Try this now....

....These kind of issues can occur when the Windows Update database or components are corrupted, one or more services related to Windows Update are not running, etc.
Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Hi, do you mean by that that you've attempted an in-place upgrade repair install and that failed?
(I.e. log in as normal, then either mount an iso file you've downloaded and run setup.exe, or run setup.exe from a bootable disk you've created) - or something else?

If that is failing, that suggests you have some significant issue which will also prevent you from upgrading... but wait a minute, Windows update isn't working anyway so...

I suggest you need to do some basic checks..
First, the forum prompted you thus: (so we don't have to keep asking...)
    Windows update missing from settings-win-10-version.png

    Then run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt

If that passes, then similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and report the summary result.

If ok, then you can attempt an in-place upgrade repair install, and report the outcome including the exact text of any error message. But first I need your Windows build please.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

Yes, that's why I suggested the tutorial for resetting windows update. After that the in-place upgrade may well work, though hopefully it may not be needed any more.

Sorry, my windows version is 1909 (build 18363.1379). 259GB of free space on C drive.

Unfortunately Bree, that didn’t works either, there were a few errors when it ran.

There’s also some registry strings missing too I believe.

    Hello @Fitzy,

One possibility that you could try is to perform an In-Place-Upgrade - Repair Install. Have a look and see if you think it could be a viable option . . .

     In-Place-Upgrade - Repair Install

    Information & Tutorials:

This is a Non-Destructive Process which keeps ALL your Apps, Programs, and Personal Data Intact . . .

IMPORTANT: This is an extract from the Tutorial below . . .

    • You will only be able to do a repair install of Windows 10 from within Windows 10. You will not be able to do a repair install at boot or in Safe Mode.
    • You will need at least around 10 GB + what Windows is currently using of free space available on the Windows drive.
    • The installation media (ex: ISO or USB) must be the same edition and same or newer build as your currently installed Windows 10. If it's not, then the repair install will fail.
    • The installation media (ex: ISO or USB) must be the same base language (aka: system default language) as your currently installed Windows 10. If it's not, then you will not keep anything.
    • If you have a 32-bit Windows 10, then you must use a 32-bit ISO or USB.
    • If you have a 64-bit Windows 10, then you must use a 64-bit ISO or USB.

    > How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    Basically . . .

[1] Download the ISO to the Desktop.
    [2] Right-click the ISO > Mount.
    [3] Open File Explorer.
[4] Double-click the Mounted Drive to open it.
    [5] Double-click setup.exe.
    [6] Choose the Upgrade option.
[7] Select Change what to keep.
    [8] Select One of the following . . .

    • Keep Personal Files and Apps.
    • Keep Personal Files Only.
    • Nothing.

[9] Unmount the ISO by right-clicking the Mounted Drive > Eject.

The only downside is that you could POSSIBLY lose some of your personalizations.

    Recommendations:

    DISABLE:

    ANY Non-Microsoft . . .

    • Antivirus Software.
    • Firewall software.
    • Drive Encryption Software.

    I hope this helps.

The in-place repair upgrade is a good suggestion. But unless you are happy to upgrade to 20H2 you'll need the ISO for your current 1909. For older versions, see Option Six in this tutorial.

Unfortunately, the in-place upgrade failed again, I tried with 20H2 build and it failed to install at approx 60-70%, the same as the previous attempts, looks like I either live with out the update facility or do a fresh install, but with plenty of regularly used programs, this would be the ver last resort.
