Trying to update a Lenovo Ideapad 100S-141BR

    Hi, all -

I'm trying to do a Windows 10 update on my 2018 Lenovo Ideapad 100S-141BR, but it keeps telling me there isn't enough disc space. I've tried attaching a flash drive that has more than enough room on it, but the computer seems to be ignoring it and keeps telling me I don't have enough disc space. There's no way for me to delete enough stuff off the hard drive to free up enough space since most of the room is taking up by systems files.

Then I got a message from the Windows 10 Update Assistant that my Lenovo couldn't be updated.

Is there any way I can make this update work out, or is there no way to update this laptop?

    Thanks!! :)

Hi SueB and welcome to TF,

So how big is your hard drive then? If you trying to update your Windows, I think it has nothing to do with connecting a flash drive, if you mean USB flash drive. More likely you would need a bigger hard drive, as bro67 said.

Hi, what is your current build? The forum prompted you thus:

How much free space do you have on your system drive? (For a feature update (upgrade) you need at least around 30Gb free). If you're simply short of space, there's a tutorial to help:
Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10

What is the update or upgrade you are attempting?

Please post the text of any error message exactly as shown.

Note that when upgrading, Windows.old is created on your system drive - about as large as your existing Windows folder. Attaching a flash drive does not help with this.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the replies! :)

I'm trying to update from 1803 to 20H2. My build info is:

    Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.1304), copyright 2018

It's a 29.8 GB hard drive with 3.9 GB of free space, with most of the space being taken up by the system files. I've tried to delete some of the temporary files but it gets so far in purging the files and then stops. This laptop is my backup/ travel computer so I don't use it very much.

Thanks for the information about the USB flash drive, I'll see about the SSD! Though I don't suppose there's any way to fix this that doesn't involve taking the laptop apart?

Product Overview - ideapad 100S-14IBR - Lenovo Support GB

Oh, I assume you've only got the EMMC option. That's tiny- as said above you need a bigger drive. Most people's Windows partition alone is almost that big, and can be a lot larger.

The device can take (that says) SSD: 128 GB / 256 GB. Go for the larger. There's little in it pricewise. Just make sure you get the right one.

    Recommended - anti-static precautions.

Better article was quoted by bro67 above:

Note you will need then to transfer your O/S to the SSD and boot from that.

OK, thanks! I'll check it all out!!

It is tiny, I only really use the laptop when I travel to keep up on the internet and emails. It's never given me any problems apart from needing the update!

    Thanks again, all! :)

Still putting in even a 128gig m.2 will give you a refresh on allowing you to still use it well into some years. Linux will even run on it. With Snap, you can utilize Office365 live on Linux and have a lighter distro. [Solved] How to boot Linux Mint on Lenovo ideapad 100S-14IBR? - Linux Mint Forums
