I'm kinda with Superfly. I think my key gets detected and read, but doesn't past muster when its run through the algorithm or what ever it is that validates the keys.

I am not sure but I believe that during the installation of windows 10 the key to be entered must be a windows 10 key. It is only after the end of the installation of windows 10 that it is possible to enter a key win.7-8.

I installed a volume license version of Windows 8 Pro on my computer. I activated it with the MAK key from my account on the Microsoft VLSC. I did the same thing when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro. I had no problem doing the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro like everyone else here has been doing.

MAK keys get you a permanent Digital License, KMS keys don't.

Now you have a digital licence for W10 Pro on this PC you can clean install W10 Pro and skip entering a key when asked. It will activate automatically from the existing digital licence.

BTW a backup of existing installation (for prosperity LOL) and a clean install would be the way I'd go - never trust an install from an unknown source.
To Bree, Superfly, NavyLCDR and alphanumeric..... My renewed thanks. Having successfully established a digital licence to overcome what had apparently been a KMS-controlled install, and after taking a backup [clone] image, I have just done a clean install of Win 10 Pro. It went perfectly. The product key screen was skipped [didn't appear] and at the end of the install Win 10 shows as activated with digital licence. So we are out of the woods and good to go!

I've now got to turn my attention to the other laptop(s) I have which still run Windows 7 - but I'm hopeful those upgrades will run smoothly. I would mark this thread "Solved".... but I see that this discussion has thrown up some issues (about the product-key checking during the upgrade process) which enthusiasts and experts are still exploring. I can't help with that, but I wish you all success.

Many thanks again: it's good for morale, and confidence, to be able to tap into the wisdom and helpful support of serious experts.

    Until the next time.....!

If those Win7 machines are activated, and if you'd prefer to do a clean install of W10, then you can capture the activation and go straight for a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade first.

My word .... is there no end to the clever wheezes (or alternative routes) for getting from where I am (Win7) to where I want to be (Win10)?

Once again, thank you, Bree, for another useful tip...
