    Thank you for your reply.

You may find Policy Plus (free, Google) easier. It's like the Group Policy editor, but has a find feature.

Here I searched for 365 - there's the deferral policy.

I believe others have told you. Bottom option, then they are in the Windows Update section.

    Great. Just downloaded it.

Would you mind offering your opinion about installing (KB5001391) at this time?

KB5001391 is an optional D Release cumulative update. It contains no new security fixes so there is no compelling reason to install it (not unless you are affected by one of the specific issues it addresses). Anyway, it's a preview update - you'll get the same fixes (and a few more) in the next Patch Tuesday B Release CU.

    Microsoft said:
...our “B” release, Update Tuesday (most often referred to as Patch Tuesday) updates are published the second Tuesday of each month. These updates are the primary and most important of all the monthly update events and are the only regular releases that include new security fixes....

...The “C” and “D” releases occur the third and fourth weeks of the month, respectively. These preview releases contain only non-security updates, and are intended to provide visibility and testing of the planned non-security fixes targeted for the next month’s Update Tuesday release.

I know I'm late for the party but I thought I should share something I have discovered on my 20H2 system in regards to pausing updates.

In order to control windows update I have enabled Group Policy for Windows 10 home, downloaded Windows Automatic Updates Manager and made various recommended registry edits. None of these have appeared to work as settings have only shown that I have paused updates and will resume on a specific date in the near future.

What I discovered today is that clicking on pause updates repeatedly gives me another 7 days each time, giving me a very simple way to pause updates indefinitely. I have paused updates until May 8, 2022 as shown below.

After 20h2 update, no 365 day deferral option-update.jpg

I don't know if this works for all Windows 10 versions. For me it is a massive help as I firmly believe that Windows Update is the biggest threat to Windows stability, and far worse than whatever might happen by not downloading updates.

There are, and have been for years, free 3rd party utilities which are described time and again, along with two tenforums tutorials one of which includes one of those utilities, to allow you to take complete control of Windows Updates when using Home. (Disables Windows Updates, then you scan manually and use check box selection).

I used one such to stay on 1903 until recently (and then had some 4 issues to resolve having upgraded to 20H2).

Policy Plus (free) is, I gather, preferable to hacks to deploy the Group Policy Editor in Home which is then not fully effective. And it adds Find.

Note- it has been possible to get a Pro license validly for around £40 for a long time. This has been posted on tenforums.

Yes but they don't work on 20H2 and as such the tutorials are becoming obsolete. Group Policy for home works for many settings but not to configure Windows Update.

Either way, the simple method of pausing updates indefinitely I outlined above works on my system.

If you have Home, there's no guarantee that trying to use a hacked group policy editor will work.

Anyway, you're happy with what you have.

If you find a problem with a particular tutorial (every attempt to maintain them is made) do feel free to make an appropriate comment under that tutorial. The author will most likely respond.

    See:
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...pdate.htmlHave you used this?
@Matthew Wai - could you please confirm to this user that this works for 20H2? Thanks!

    Have you tried this?
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

If something doesn't work your feedback may help others. Thank you.

No that is one method I have not tried but thought held promise.

I will look into what I did try and didn't work and note that in the relevant tutorial. Windows Automatic Updates Manager is one method that doesn't appear to work on my version of Windows 10.

I've not tried that one myself- previously I used Sledgehammer (from which Matthew Wai borrowed code by agreement if I recall) to stay with 1903 until 20H2.

The scripts work perfectly on my 20H2 Home.
BTW, I have got no notification of your mention although I got notifications of others' mentions.

Try it out. You are welcome to provide feedback there.

Can the following paragraph be considered to be an agreement?

Also, I like what you're doing by using parts of the wrapper script with your own code to do things differently than what I'm doing. Have you considered making your project public? Because if you think it would be useful, you should. I wrote the wrapper script for myself after studying ideas and code I found on the net, just like what you're doing. Others saw my script and asked me to make it public, just like I'm asking you. And as I might have mentioned before, you're welcome to use any parts of the script you find useful in controlling updates. I don't care if you use 90% or all of the wrapper script, changing it, adding your own code, and making it your own project. Open source all the way!
I think it's something you should consider.
