It's automatically doing it. It checked for them once at 3:09 then again at 4:39. I don't know if it happened yesterday or not. But it checked for them at almost the same time on Friday. At about 4:39. Can the second time be for app updates? But if it is, then why did that not happen before?
Right-click on the Start button--> Windows PowerShell.
Run the following command, and you will get a very long list of events related to Windows Update.
Get-WinEvent -ProviderName 'Microsoft-Windows-WindowsUpdateClient'
See whether you can get some clues from the list.
Interesting, mine has never auto checked for updates, within the same day. Regardless of how many times I may shut down/restart the PC.
Thus, I can really offer no explanation/advice. I will follow this thread, to see if it is resoled.

I doubt it is malicious, yet odd.
You may wish to try this (longshot), nothing bad will come of it, except a little time spent, even if it doesn't fix the issue.
Click Win+R, to open the Run box.
Type in services.msc to open Services.
Double-click the Windows update service.
On the General tab, locate the Startup type option and select Disabled from the drop-down menu.
Then restart your computer to save the changes.

After that, do the following...
Repeat steps 1 - 4, and select Automatic from the Startup drop-down menu. Then restart your machine once more.

Mine does (20H2). Morning and evening.
(There's another task that checks for app updates, then there are app data updates, Defender updates...)
