KB4023057 caused freezing in the following case, in which the victim bought a new PC unnecessarily.

Computer freezes on normal tasks

Well haven't been around for a few days now, haven't been using the PC up until yesterday, when started using it again.

I don't know why, but I'm not getting this issue now. Bizarre !

Windows Updates downloads Defender Updates, but doesn't continually bug me to try and download and re-install KB4023057 anymore.

So, whether it was something I've done anyway, or something MS themselves have rectified, I don't know. I was almost prepared to do an in-place repair upgrade, which is what was suggested on Microsoft Communities. I may still do that anyway.
