I just do it out of habit, as I'm very security-conscious, and yes Windows Update should update automatically, although I still end up applying several definition updates a day.

I'd rather do that and be up-to-date, than be exposed to the possibilities of viruses / malware.

Being up to date renders you liable to MS's latest mistakes. I'll wish you good luck with your strategy.

Use Task Scheduler to run the following command at intervals:

    "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" "-SignatureUpdate"

Definition updates will be installed automatically, if any.

    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19042.746]
    (c) 2020 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\Matthew_Wai>"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" "-SignatureUpdate"
    Signature update started . . .
    Signature update finished.

Just tried Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting PC.

There were some problems reported (I can't remember what) before I restarted, but the problem I was having before still persists.

I have to go out soon, I'll be back later.

I may try SFC, and DISM, see what happens.

Well, SFC and DISM didn't change anything.

Having said that, tonight is 'Patch Tuesday', so I will wait and see what happens with that, whether that will change anything.

    Yes, Windows Update found those.

Having said that, despite hoping the updates might remedy the problem, it hasn't actually made any difference.

I still keep getting prompted for KB 4023057.

Hide KB4023057. You can do without it. I hid it as soon as I found it.

I also hid KB4023057 on 4 PCs immediately after reading about it.
