Is Windows 10 20H2 Feature Update Stable now

Windows 10 Pro - 2004, OS Build: 19041.867

Howdy Folks ,
My attention has been elsewhere for a while, and I see 21H1 will soon be upon us.
I'd like to know if 20H2 is (reasonably) stable now for me to upgrade, and if so, any thoughts or comments that may be useful to know.

I've been holding to 2004 using the Group Policy Target Feature Update Setting and plan to make the change there to 20H2 and wait for the Feature Update to show up on my Windows Update page ... unless I learn here there is a better/preferred way to go.

As you probably know, 2004 and 20H2 share a common set of system files. In fact, all the 20H2 features are already in your 2004 but dormant, waiting to be enabled by a small enablement package that installs just like a cumulative update. Crucially, the enablement package can easily be uninstalled and reverts 20H2 to 2004, should you not like what you find. Unlike a full feature update, there is no Windows.old and no time limit on how long after the update you are allowed to go back.

Windows 10, versions 2004 and 20H2 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 20H2 are included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 2004 (released October 13, 2020), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 20H2 features.

As such, 20H2 is not truly a new OS and should be as stable as 2004. In fact, if you compare the known and resolved issues for each you'll find most are common to both 2004 and 20H2.

That should not come as much of a surprise, as they also share a common set of cumulative updates.


It is known that the forthcoming 21H1 is also going to be delivered by an enablement package, so it's possible that we both already have some 21H1 features dormant in our 2004 or 20H2.
