I just want to say a massive thank you to all that have given me advice, the problem is solved now,the problem was with the cumulative update 2021-03 kb5000803,its that one that keep going round in circles,I also hid the cumulative 2018-05 for windows 10 version 1607 and never installed it,I downloaded and installed the 20213 on its own rather that as a group I dont know which fixed it but it,s now up to date.I used the WAU manager that I found to be easier to understand and there was a box to stop windows looking for the updates.next to read on on creating a back up.thanks once again everyone
    Mandy,

So, if I have understood correctly, you have reinstalled Windows but have deliberately remained on Version 1607.

You do realize that newly-discovered vulnerabilities on out-of-support Versions such as 1607 do not get patched and that your computer is therefore more susceptible to malware than an up-to-date one?

I had one very old computer that would not update beyond Version 1709. All attempts by me failed and another owner of the same model had the same experience. I stopped using it for any work that needed the internet and just keep it on one side ready for odd-jobs. Perhaps your computer is also an old one.

    Mandy,

Please check there has not been a misunderstanding. In a Command window or Powershell window enter this command
    Code:
    winver
and post the dialog that appears.
    {You can get to a Command window or Powershell window by right-clicking on your Start button. One or other of them will be a choice in the menu that appears. The menu will also contain an Admin option for the same one of them but you do not need to use that - it would work just as well but you do not need it.}

WU should have done Version updates for you. Windows update can automatically hold back if it detects that the computer cannot handle the latest version. Perhaps that is what is happening.

The latest Version is 20H2. The previous Version was 2004 but they changed the Version numbering system after that.

Ironic that this has come to light when you have been asking how to stop WU. Your Version 1607 will not have been getting any WU updates for quite some time [other than WD definitions & some minor things].

I suggest that you make a system image then, when you are ready, try a manual update to the latest Version.
I can talk you through that when the time comes as can many others here.
This is what I will suggest when the time comes.
1 Download an "ISO file" for the new Version
Download Windows 10 ISO File -TenForumsTutorials
2 Double-click on the ISO file to "mount" [it will appear like an extra CD drive] then run its setup.exe file. All this is done from within Windows not by booting from anything. The procedure is called a "Repair install" or "InPlace upgrade". Whilst you should always get your backups up to date before a major task such as this, it should not affect your installed applications or your own files on the computer.

    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

Under "Select type", select "Windows (Final)".
    Under "Select version", select "Windows 10, Version 2009 - 20H2 (build 19042.631)".
Under "Select edition", select "Windows 10".

    Mandy,

You do not have to consider that reference to Techbench yet. It is one of the options that is explained in the tutorial I gave you a link to about ISO files.

TechBench allows direct download from Microsoft, the most convenient way.

So does everything else in the tutorial I gave Mandy a link to.

I earnestly suggest that you wait to allow Mandy to get to grips with system images and then get herself ready to discuss further steps.

I think you mean 20H2 [I can see that in your My computer entry].

Perhaps I am overreacting to your particular choice of words.
Judging by what has been discussed before in this thread, I think you mean a Macrium Reflect system image so you are referring to the Macrium Reflect boot USB.
[It was Macrium that was discussed in posts #16 & later.]

You should not have to install Windows again. You can just use your Macrium Reflect system image to restore an earlier state of the OS disk that predates whatever problem makes you consider reinstallation. It is an awful lot less work than a reinstallation as well.

Do remember that the Macrium Reflect system image covers the whole of your OS disk including any of your own files on it so restoring the image would overwrite your own files with whatever their state was when the image was made. You need to make separate backups of your own files. I generally make a new system image every month but make backups of my own files much, much more often.

"CD"? I imagine that most people make a Windows 10 installation USB rather than CD. It is easier, it can be re-written whenever you want and it does not break if you sit on it.

Hi I would like to use wumngr but I just wanted advice on what to do with windows updates so I can just run this without windows searching for updates

Thank you so much Paul,I will have a read of these later and hopefully know what to set it at,I thought the links you sent were just how to disable windows automatic updates, did,nt realise they were for wumngr too
    Hi

Direct answer to your question is you do "not" need to ever enable windows updates again, it can be solely managed from wumgr.

Click the refresh icon in wumgr if they not showing, this will initiate its own check, if it doesnt show available updates after you click the icon then none are available.
