Hi, yes i have read that before but there is no easy guide i can find on any site,at the moment i am in the process of wiping my machine so i have a clean windows to start again

By the way, you will often be asked for the Version or Build number of Windows 10.
- Right-click on the Start button
- Select Run
- In it, enter winver
- In your specs OS line, enter everything in the line beginning Version and anything else you want such as Enterprise
- Here's mine

- Version [mine is 20H2] refers to the latest half-yearly update "Feature update"
- Build number is in two parts - the 19042 also refers to the latest half-yearly update "Feature update" whereas the .868 shows the latest monthly "Cumulative update" I have installed.
- The para underneath includes the Edition name. Mine is Home.

I update my specs [OS line only] every month by updating the Version & Build numbers I've entered in that line. They show up in the block on the left of each one of my posts two lines above the Union Jack.
Windows 10 Home x64 Version 20H2 Build 19042.868
Naturally, it is entirely up to you but having all that info right there stops people having to ask me about it when I request assistance here which avoids delaying any useful guidance people might want to post.


By the way, while you are reading the various WUMgr reviews, note that Win10Guru is a highly respected member of TenForums called EdTittel. I think his review is the most informative of them all.

thank you so much for that valuable information denis,at the moment I am wiping the hard drive so i can start with a fresh install of windows but will get back when everything is running again

I am a total beginner so dont understand much im afraid,I wish i had all your knowledge but as long as my pc updated and ran have,nt really explored anything else,the reason i,m using a program to update is windows just keeps going round in circles and searching for the same update and installing it,if it was updating ok i would have just left it,once its running again I will try again with it.I was reading the links in paul,s post and have seen he refers to a different program that looks very easy and also with much more info than the one I am using, so have got the link for that i will take a look at that,thanks to all of you for the advice,hopefully i will get there in the end and post back how i got on with this new program

Please post a screenshot of your Update History.
If it's failing to update, then the next update may well fail in a similar way.

(Simply type Update History in the search box on your taskbar and if not visible there, Winkey + s to reveal it).

You can hide (block) a particular update. (Tutorial available).
Or use one of the 3rd party tools.

1 I sincerely believe that the best thing you can do [even before attacking Windows update] is to start making frequent system images.
- A system image is a special type of big backup file that, if restored, returns the disk contents to exactly the same state they were in at the time the image was made. It's as if you swapped your disk with a clone of it.
- I make a new system image every month before doing any Windows or application updates.
- A system image is not the same as backing up your own files. You would want to do that much more frequently then making system images.
- If a WU messes up your computer then you can use a system image to get back up again within twenty minutes or so. System images can turn a disaster into a mere inconvenience.

Run your re-installation without connecting to the internet [to avoid all action by WU] then make a new system image so you capture the most basic/unworked of all possible Windows system states.

It can also make bootable system images. This facility is called viBoot and it requires Win10 Pro.

2 While you're thinking about backups, consider Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials as well.

3 Then start worrying about completing your setup [install your applications, work through Settings, etc] then make a new post-setup system image.

4 Then start worrying about WU. You could start by either setting up WUMgr / that other one you've been looking at or by setting your network connections to 'metered' which just means WU will not normally download updates. That will buy you enough time to get to grips with things.

Hi denis,thank you for your reply,its too late to do the system image before windows starts updating,this is something i certainly want to learn as what i usually do is use dban on fast erase but it still take two and a half hours to wipe,then of course the worst bit of installing the updates,I will look at the Macrium Reflect and read up on how to create a system image.I am in the process of installing updates at the moment using WAU manager but have,nt got as far as the ones that mess up yet

You should have created a restore point beforehand, as you have not created an image.
Creating a restore point entails no learning.

You should have disabled automatic updates before setting up a connection as I did.

I just want to say a massive thank you to all that have given me advice,the problem is solved now,the problem was with the cumulative update 2021-03 kb5000803,its that one that keep going round in circles,I also hid the cumulative 2018-05 for windows 10 version 1607 and never installed it,I downloaded and installed the 20213 on its own rather that as a group I dont know which fixed it but it,s now up to date.I used the WAU manager that I found to be easier to understand and there was a box to stop windows looking for the updates.next to read on on creating a back up.thanks once again everyone
