    Windows Update / Word 2003

    Hi,

I own Word/Office 2003. Despite Microsoft's attempts to force us into a subscription service for Word 365, Word 2003 works perfectly! with the latest Windows Version...20H2 (I believe).

But Windows Update keeps trying unsuccessfully to download this KB 4601554 for Word 2003. The update seems superfluous and I would like to know how to stop Win Update from attempting to install this. I have included a snapshot of what I see.

    ThanksWindows Update / Word 2003-clipboard01.jpg

You copies the wrong KB number, it's actually KB907417.

You can manually download and install this update from the Microsoft Update Catalog, that would stop WU trying to install it.

There appears there may be a problem though even with the manual update. You may also need a .cab file from the Office 2003 install CD to complete the install. See this thread.

Solved - Windows Updates Problem | Tech Support Guy

The download is a .cab file, extract the .msp file it contains and double-click on it to install. I have just successfully updated a machine with Office 2003, but then it still had all the Office setup files in the C:\MSOCache folder. You may have to supply the install disk if you have cleaned up the Office 2003 setup files (which sounds likely, probably explaining why it fails to install through windows update).

The release notes for KB907417 are no longer available from Microsoft, but you can read them in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine here:

If you just want to stop WU downloading it, then you may be able to hide this update.

Cleanup does not work for this...nor does the outdated manual download. I am confused about the process with the CAB file. Which CAB file am I to look for? Could you be a bit more specific about this process?

Go to the Update Catalog and download KB907417. Go to:

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...spx?q=KB907417

click the Download button, then click the link in the window that opens. You will download a file named otkloadr_c87e2fe94dd873224afa65e2af2473ca3e307a37.cab,

    Windows Update / Word 2003-image.png

In File Explorer, double-click on the .cab file to open it. You'll find a single file in it named OTKLOADR.msp (a Windows Installer Patch file). Copy this file to somewhere convenient, then double-click on it to start the update. Office Setup will open.....

    Windows Update / Word 2003-image.png

...click Next, and on the next screen...

    Windows Update / Word 2003-image.png

    ...click the Update button.

If asked, you may need to provide your Office install disk.

According to the following article the error comes from a missing file from the Office 2003 installation. They say that you can solve this by inserting the Office 2003 install disc before you try the update manually.

This also seems to be a way to apply .msp patches....

Ah -- it looks like I can install MSP files with this (where %%F is the fully-qualified filename):
    msiexec /update "%%F" /qn /norestart
I'll try extracting all the CABs and give my installation script a whirl...

Say Thanks....But the cab file does not show up unless I save it as an 'unconfirmed' download...(CRDownload). So, still stumped!
It looks like you are suggesting to reinstall Word/Office as a solution?

Finally did the update as you instructed but the darn error message in Windows Update I referred to is still coming up!
Question: If this error message remains, will I be able to get future updates w/o a problem?

I actually installed Office 2003 Professional to test this.
After I installed it I ran Windows update.
This took a while because there must been 20 Office 2003 updates to download and install.
    I got the same error...
    Windows Update / Word 2003-2021_04_03_08_49_211.jpg

I manually searched for and downloaded KB907417 update and installed it.
This time the update was successful

Here are the steps I took to find and install the KB907417 update

    Search for KB907417 update
    Select Microsoft Update Catalog
    Windows Update / Word 2003-2021_04_03_08_36_141.jpg

    Select Download
    Windows Update / Word 2003-2021_04_03_08_36_212.jpg

    Double-click on cab file otkloadr_c87e2fe94dd873224afa65e2af2473ca3e307a37.cab
    Windows Update / Word 2003-2021_04_03_08_36_263.jpg

Drag OTKLOADR.msp out of cab file
    Windows Update / Word 2003-2021_04_03_08_36_304.jpg

Double-click on OTKLOADR.msp to install update

Well...I guess we made some progress. I'm not getting an error message after going through the above process. It's just stuck at a 10% download when opening Settings/Update page. That's ok with me...as long as I can get future updates. Just wonder why it would do this. Maybe in a few hours it will kick in.
