Did you install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats ?
This allows Office 2003 programs to open and save Office 2007 & above files. For example Word 2003 can open Word 2010 ".docx" documents. I liked this because ".docx" are smaller than ".doc" files.

The difference is shown below where I used Word 2003 to save the same document in ".doc" and ".docx" formats.
