    Problem installing KB5000842 via WU

Saw this update and decided to run it. All seemed to go ok. I clicked on Restart now and the machine restarted. The update screen came on the and it got to about 30% and then the machine rebooted again. Nothing overly unusual.

In most cases, it would reboot and then resume with the update. Now, however, it did not. It started the reboot but now all I am seeing is a blank black screen (as if the computer is off). Nothing appears to be happening as far as i can tell. I do not see any activity on my hard drive light. But my screen power is lit as if the computer is on. It has been about 15 minutes since this happened.

I guess I could do a hard power off but am afraid to do that. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Well, I did the hard shut down as I couldn't wait anymore and got a blue screen that says Windows was repairing something (it didn't say what) and then it rebooted and now it is saying Windows couldn't complete the updates....undoing changes. Now it is restarting again. Now it restarted again. Now it says getting Windows ready and finally rebooted to my log in screen. Damn, when I saw the Repairing screen, I got pretty darn nervous. Never had an issue with WU before today. Now I am getting a message that my computer recovered from a start up failure on W10, ver 1903. That was not fun.

Are you truly on 1903? If so you should never have seen KB5000842 offered in WU. It is only applicable to versions 2004/20H2 (19041/19042).

    KB5000842 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.906 and v20H2 19042.906

FWIW I have installed it on a 20H2 machine without issue (apart from taking nearly an hour to install).

Yep, you are correct. I am on Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2, OS Build 19042.870.

I tried the update twice and the same thing happened both times. On a reboot, the computer startup just stopped loading and it just sat there.

    That makes more sense

Yes, the machine I updated successfully (if slowly) was also on 19042.870, albeit W10 Home.

As a preview CU I wouldn't worry about it yet (nor will I bother on my other machines). There are no new security patches in this one, just the non-security fixes that we'll all get next Patch Tuesday, April 13th.

OK, thanks for the info. It just scared the you know what out of me when I saw the attempting to repair Windows message. While I am fully backed up, I don't have time to mess with having to restore my computer.

Fortunately you 'repair' seems to have just been rolling back an unsuccessful CU. As I said, there's no compelling need to install this optional CU, so I'd just wait and see what Patch Tuesday brings. Only if that too fails would I start looking at troubleshooting WU.

    Hello @x7007

Can you upload the Windows Update logs from the following path?
    C:\Windows\logs\CBS

Copy and paste the CBS folder on your desktop, zip it and then upload it on WeTransfer and share the link here please.

    Friendly greetings

Sorry for any mistakes. English is not my native language.
