Unable to install latest Windows 10 Updates

    Hi,

I am running Windows 10 Pro N version 20H2 installed on 11. ‎2. ‎2021 with OS build 19042.804 and Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.551.0. For the past 2 weeks I am unable to install the following updates:

    2021-01 Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB4589212
    2021-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5000802)
    2021-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5001649)

I successfully download them, apparently install as well. But once the PC reboot it tries to finish the installation. Then it fails and after 3-4 reboots it goes back to Windows with a message:

We couldn't install this update, but you can try again (0x80070003).

I have tried stopping services, deleting files within ServiceDistribution folder and download updates again, but the result is always the same.

Can anyone help me, please? Thank you.

Hello @Hatedia , welcome to Ten Forums.

You might try resetting Windows Update.

Thank you, @Ghot for quick reply. I did try that. Then re-download and started installing. Result was the same.

Hi, here's an example thread where an instance of that error number was resolved. Technical. See around posts #8,11

Be careful about what you're asking for. Have you searched these updates for info? I certainly would avoid this one and have because I pick & choose my updates.

As dalchina said, you're not alone.

If I recall correctly, I had to download KB4589212 manually as the Windows update version failed repeatedly.

Given that you have an Intel processor, this would be a good idea.

For those using a non-Intel processor (AMD), I can't see the value and believe MS screwed up by offering it to many.

And welcome to Ten Forums Hatedia.

Agreed- several problems for some in recent 20H2 updates. See the relevant News section articles where there is a thread per update per build and download links for a basic list and comments following.

You have Pro: consider setting updates to Notify in group policy so you can choose when updates are applied and hang back a bit to wait for things to settle.

Thank you for your help. I have tried it all but nothing worked. I could not be bothered by wasting my time and got rid of this "N" crap version. Re-installed the proper Pro version all worked like a charm. I consider this issue of mine resolved.

You're most welcome and I'm glad to hear you've got things sorted out.

You might consider investigating new updates before installing them. I appreciate it can be a pain but that's much easier than fixing the mess when it goes sideways and in recent times that seems to happen often.

Frankly, I usually do, but I was in the time rush and to be honest ever since I have (for not apparent reason) decided to go with "N" version with reinstallation it was nothing but troubles. Now it is all silky smooth.

We've all had those 'too busy to check' periods.

For those looking to read about Windows N & KN types, check this article.
There's also an add-on fix but likely a clean install would be the best solution.

What Is an “N” or “KN” Edition of Windows?
