How to Avoid Updating to Version 20H2 of Windows 10

    All,
I have Windows 10 Pro running Version 1909. I was getting threatening notices from Microsoft saying that shortly (May 2021) they will no longer support or update my version.

I upgraded to 20H2 as requested & immediately my ability to network map to & from the other PC's on my home network stopped. FYI: all other Windows 10 computers on my network are running Windows 10 version 2004.

I found on the internet many complaints about this very issue when upgrading to version 20H2. The supposed fixes I found did not work on my PC. Because my PC is used as the defacto server (Everyone else's files/documents are stored on a share on my PC) I needed it fixed.

I backed out the install of that version. Upon restart I got the blue screen of death. Had to repair Windows. Upon restart, I was back on version 1909 and all is well again on my network......

    Now to the questions:
    1) Is it possible to upgrade just to version 2004 & NOT 20H2?
    2) Is there anyone else who has had this same experience & successfully overcame the issue?

    Thanks!

You can upgrade to a specific version by performing an in place upgrade repair with the applicable iso version.

The iso can be installed on the desktop or you can create a bootable flash drive.
Either location of the iso can be used for the in place upgrade repair.

For the in place upgrade repair: power on the computer and open file explorer > identify the iso > launch setup or setup.exe

    Thanks Zbook,

I have also just found this info & link:

Use the Microsoft media creation tool to force the Windows 10 Anniversary Update today | Windows Central

Might this be easier/better method? What do you think?

The above link as a suggestion came from this thread:

The in place upgrade repair is the method used in the other link.

    These are some iso sources:

Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)
    UUP dump

End users can clean install 1607 and upgrade to 19H2 or they can first try 1803.
    Skipping versions is ok.

    Thanks all!

So do you recommend that I upgrade straight to version 2004? Or straight to version 20H2?

If 20H2's causing you problems, then you can go to 2004 using a 2004 iso or as described above.

If you wish to stay on 2004, as you have Pro, you can set updates to Notify using Group Policy.
That would protect you for now, as you then have to approve every update.

Other tools (frequently mentioned here) are available to disable or replace Windows Update. That will buy you some time.

    E.g.
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10
Option 7 includes one of the free tools available to replace Windows Update.

Remember, no-one's actually forcing you to upgrade at all- you can stay with your current build using that method or one of the others.

Meanwhile... I searched tenforums for you and found this:

Network computers not showing after 20H2 update

    There's a bug in 20H2, acknowledged, with a workaround.

Keep an eye on the News section and the latest 20H2 updates and this:
Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 version 20H2
    - albeit the table makes no mention of this yet.

The OS can be upgraded to any version with the following understanding:

    a) there is a default 10 day rollback period
    b) the rollback period can be modified to 60 days
    c) rollbacks can fail
    d) making free backup images should enable you to return anytime
    e) system restore points disappear as part of the upgrade process

Ok, none of this worked. I downloaded and ran:

    Specify_or_cancel_target_Feature_Update_version.bat

Upgraded from 1909 to 2004. EXACT same issues on the network. PC's not being seen and no ability to map a network drive to this PC.

I backed the upgrade out and all is fine again on the network. I guess I am just stuck with version 1909...............
