"We couldn't install this optional quality update"

    "We couldn't install this optional quality update"


    Just today, Windows Update showed "Optional quality update available".
    But after pressing "Update" button, and some delay, the error message appeared:
    We couldn't install this update but you can try again (0x80070541)
    2021-03 Cumulative Update for W10 Version 20H2 (KB5001649)
    If I press Download and install - then the failing cycle just repeats.
    Do I just wait and re-try? Anybody else getting this, or similar past failures? Reason?

    Did you read up on that update ?

    You more than likely don`t need it.

    KB5001649 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.870 and v20H2 19042.870

    Identical case - which I've just answered. Try manual download. Hope it works for you too.

    This worked brilliantly. Installation completed, and error msg has gone away.
