    Laptop still on 1909

My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 310 with an i3 6100u with 8 gb of ddr4. It doesn't get used much, mostly to keep the battery ok and as up to date as possible.
    It runs W10 home 1909 18363.1440.

Every time I check updates, the message comes up about the feature update 2004, but its never ready to actually update. The AMD desktops I have are already at 2004, despite one being older, with a 970 chipset.

Should I just keep waiting, or download an iso and put a fresh copy of Windows on the laptop?

Members often suggest creating a system image with Macrium Reflect.
Then, you may download and install the latest version.

Hi, what's the exact message? Is it like the one in the screenshot here?
How to Disable Safeguard Holds for Feature Updates on Windows 10

In some cases, MS will not deliver an upgrade because of a known or expected compatibility problem.

If so, you can bypass the hold as shown there, but as Matthew Wai said, for your own security to give you a way back should things go wrong, and as a matter of routine and regular good practice to give you a full backup and way to recover when bad things happen, create a disk image beforehand.

If on the other hand it repeatedly fails to upgrade, that's quite different.

    Thank you for your reply.

That's the one to which my post applies.

I wonder if you've read it and understood its significance and the option to bypass that and the possible risk if you do.

    Have you clicked 'learn more'?

I do have a cloned SSD which gets updated every month, just in case the system turns its toes up.
I was wondering if the AMD machines are more compatible than the Intel ones, but I only have the one Intel one so I have no comparison.
There will come a time when support for the 1909 build ends, my choice is whether to wait till then or force an update sooner.
I have looked at the learn more link.

I have decided to wait until Microsoft ends full support for 1909, and if the update has not been automatically run, then an ISO will be made and hopefully I will be able to get to 2004 and keep the programmes that are on it. I will make a clone of the SSD first, just in case.

    @tinmar49

The Safeguard hold refers to the Conexant audio driver on your computer.

    Create the clone.

Download a Window 20h2 ISO, then disconnect the Internet connection and then go to the device manager and uninstall the sound device, marking the option to delete the driver from the computer.

When done, start the upgrade via ISO.

Note: If you have a third-party antivirus program or encryption software such as VeraCrypt or TrueCrypt installed on your computer, uninstall these programs beforehand and also use the removal tool of the respective antivirus program manufacturer.

I'm pretty sure that your audio device will work after installation.

    Friendly greetings

I switched on the laptop today, May 1st and the update took about 90 minutes. After promising it for getting on for a year, Microsoft felt they would have to get it done by May. I do have a backup made of the SSD just in case. The build is 19042.928.
