Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 not downloading.

I'm currently running Windows 10 Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1440).

I'm trying to download and install Windows 10, version 20H2 (due to being notified that my current version will no longer be supported soon), but it won't download. It stays stuck at 0% for hours (when I check the network section task manager, I can see that it isn't downloading anything - there's no network traffic), then it gives up and gives me the option to download again. Rinse and repeat.

Here's a screenshot of how it looks:

Is there a way to make Windows Update download the update normally so I wouldn't have to resort to using the ISO? Is there a way to diagnose what is causing it not to download?

A clean install is what I most want to avoid. I put a lot of work into customizing Windows and installing programs. I don't want to lose that.

Probably the easiest way to deal with Feature Update issues, is the old In-Place upgrade...
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

I had trouble going from 1909 to 2004. Did the in-place upgrade. It was done in approx. 40 minutes total.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

It's very quick and simple. Best part is that it fixes Windows at the same time.

    /edit

You don't HAVE to use the Media Creation Tool, to get the ISO image... there are many different ways to do that.
But... the ISO image is bay far the fastest and easiest way.

Or you can spend 3 weeks to infinity, trying to figure out why it's not working through Windows Update.

P.S. An In-Place upgrade also fixes problems with Windows Update. ^^

Unfortunately, for some reason, the OP does not want to use an ISO file.

    hi @hbenthow

    1. Did you run Update troubleshooter?
Settings -> Updates & Security -> Troubleshoot -> Additional troubleshooters -> Windows update

There are scripts that can run to look for problems and possible solutions.
Would you like to run them?

I've now tried that. It seemed to work, but now when I tried the update again, it is so far staying on "Getting things ready - 0%". It does seem to be downloading something, though (judging by the network section of the task manager - in fact, it's using most of my bandwidth). I'm not sure whether it's going to do anything or not.

Maybe I should try that, then. What sort of personalizations does it overwrite? For instance, I have quick startup disabled. Would it re-enable it? Would I lose things like C++ and Python?

I have now. The results read as follows:
Check for Windows Update issues: Detected
Some security settings are missing or have been changed - Fixed
Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed

Do you think it would be better to do that or to download the ISO and perform an in-place upgrade?
