Bear with me here - Updating from version 1909 impossible for me

    Hello all...

I've been having an ongoing issue that is driving me batty. Right now I have version 1909 and updating Windows with 1909 updates are not an issue at all. In fact, all of my Windows 10 updates (save a few - see below) occur just fine. My PC is completely up-to-date Windows 10-wise.

My problem involves updating from 1909 - to version 20H2 (in this case the 20H2 features update) which continuously runs into snags. Now mind you, for a while, there was an optional update notification on my Windows 10 update window that featured a 20H2 Features update. From what I understand, the features update gives you some of the features available in the 20H2 version.

Alright, so I've now tried to install the 20H2 features a half dozen times since October of last year. In each instance, the update portion (after hitting download) works just fine, it goes to install (which takes a ridiculously long time - at least on my system), and then it asks to reboot.

Here's where it gets dicey. I go to reboot, and it tells me that the PC will restart several times during the installation process - which it does during the update process. No problem with restarts 1 and 2. It is when it gets to restart # 3 that something doesn't take and all of a sudden I get the message on the black screen telling me that... "all changes will be rolled back." There are no indications telling me what went wrong - just that the 20H2 features update stopped and did not take hold.

Now, as an aside, over the past several days, a taskbar notification has been showing up telling me that my version (1909) is nearing the lifecycle end date and that I should update as soon as possible. When I click on that notification, it just takes me to the Windows Update window, but there is no new update to install.

Does this mean that when the fully 20H2 version rolls out, I may not be able to update due to the features update not being able to install fully (indicating an issue with my PC)?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Here is what I've done so far:

    1. Over the last few months, visited several Windows 10 forums, telling them of my inability to fully install the 20H2 Features Update (as mentioned above).

    2. I followed all the advice given to me on those forums, running various command line prompts to find errors with my PC and/or Windows 10 - none were found.

    3. I'm running a very clean system (as mentioned, all regular Windows 10 version 1909 updates occur without incident) with 64 Gigs of RAM (Windows 10 Home Edition - 64 Bit).

    4. Furthermore, I've downloaded several Microsoft Windows update products that are supposed to help with updating Windows 10 manually, but the same scenario occurs in that they will try to download and install the 20H2 Features update only - and nothing takes. Even downloading the 20H2 features update manually and then installing manually still winds up with the scenario mentioned above (during the 3rd reboot).

Can anybody here finally help me nip this thing in the bud? I don't necessarily care about the 20H2 features update as I do about being able to finally update to the full 20H2 version when support for version 1909 ends.

Hi, a straight roll-back like that is often related to a partitions or space issue. Upgrading is a very different process to updates.

Please post a screenshot of your partitions on both disks using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard or similar (not Disk Management), ensuring text in all columns is visible.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

    Run this command
    reagentc /info
at an admin command prompt and post the result.

Also post the result of running
    Setupdiag.exe
(free from MS). This is a rough attempt to analyze your upgrade log files.

    Thanks.

Does this mean that when the fully 20H2 version rolls out, I may not be able to update due to the features update not being able to install fully (indicating an issue with my PC)?
    20H2 is already out.

End of service life has 2 implications.
    a. No more routine Windows updates
    b. You may have a feature upgrade forced on you unless you take steps to block it.

    Caveat:
Daignosing upgrade failures can be uncertain and can be extremely time consuming. A couple of members tend to focus on this. Hopefully yours is one of the simpler ones.

    "Forced Feature Update..."

Where can I go to manually download and manually install the 20H2 full update (not the feature update that just won't install)? Any links?

And if a feature update is "forced upon me," that won't work as I indicated in the main body of my thread.

You seem to think there is a difference between 'features update' and Version 20H2. There is not.
    - 'features update' is just a general term applied to any of the new Versions. So is 'Version update'.
    - 20H2 is rolling out.
    MS said:
Current status as of February 23, 2021
Windows 10, version 20H2 is available for users with devices running Windows 10, who manually seek to “Check for updates” via Windows Update. We have started a new phase in our rollout. Using the machine learning-based (ML-based) training we have done so far, we are increasing the number of devices that are approaching end of service to update automatically to Windows 10, version 20H2. We will continue to train our machine learning through all phases to intelligently rollout new versions of Windows 10 and deliver a smooth update experience. The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.

Note We are slowly throttling up availability over the coming weeks to ensure a reliable download experience. As a result, the update may not be offered to you right away. For more details, see How to get the Windows 10 October 2020 Update.

After running the checks dalchina suggested, download the 20H2 ISO then use that to achieve the update [this procedure is called a Repair Install or InPlace upgrade***]

*** You can run this straight from the ISO. You do not have to make an InstallUSB first. Even if you do make one, you run this procedure within Windows - do not boot from the InstallUSB.

Thank you very much for your reply.

20H2 is the latest build so you can create a bootable installation medium or an iso file using the MS media creation tool. (Google that).
Tutorial available (in the Tutorials section).

However, manually updating is most likely to have exactly the same effect- but having the iso to hand is useful for repeat attempts when trying to resolve this. (Unless this is a simple space issue).

And if a feature update is "forced upon me," that won't work as I indicated in the main body of my thread.
Correct, which means it would likely keep repeating- a really nasty aspect of failed updates and upgrades.

I look for your reply to my first post. Thanks.

    Some additional things...

I downloaded and tried using the Media Creation Tool - and was going to use option 2 (downloading the program manually to a flash drive). When I tried that, this is the window I received:

Then try one of the Options 3, 5, 6 to just download the ISO instead.
    - I tend to use Option 5 [TechBench] and I just select the latest Version ISO {TechBench can also be used to download old ISOs but that is not compulsory}

    Regarding SFC

SFC - which I've run on several occasions indicated that all was fine and that no errors were found.

Sorry - got confused here....need direct link to manual 20H2 download

Sorry gang - so much advice being given here (and I'm not a techie). And being a senior citizen I'm getting a little slower in my ripe ole age.

Alright, my Media Creation tool will not let me do anything and a I'm following a few leads with regards to registry entries, etc. In the meantime (again), can you (or anyone) give me that direct download link for the 20H2 ISO again.

Thanks for your patience (for my stupidity).
