Ah. I was looking for something to tick. So, just un-tick this and we are back to using standard windows update.

    Yes.
Here is how I have mine set up. Just untick the box at the top, then click Save & Apply, and you can use regular Windows Update. Sometimes you need to check both places. Sometimes WU will have an update that WAU doesn't find.

In setting up WAU, I did not choose to manage defender in the WAU way; ie it should have worked as normal ( background download and install of the pattern database.
And, it's wednesday morning and the monthly patch updates have happened. Some commentary thereon, and WAU ...
    1. After start, I checked the windows settings/updates page; 2 updates listed: nominally awaiting re-start. WAU apparently has not disabled this. Additional comments below.
    2. In the history section, todays (10Mar) update to the Defender patterns is listed as successful.
    3. opened WAU; it listed the same updates as windows Update. Installed them from WAU, re-booted.
    4. After re-boot, the windows update page now showing a failure error - same one I have complained about (incessantly, it seems) - for not completing because the PC was shutting down. A retry and that condition resolved without further network activity.

I was under the impression that WAU disabled the windows auto update - allowing me to use WAU to decide when to check for updates, choose which update and when to apply it. That doesn't seem to have happened: windows auto update still functions as before, including the incredibly irritating issue of failure without notice due to a shutdown. In that context WAU does not seem to have a lot of benefit. Have I missed something???

Try Using CMD script and VBScript to control Windows Update
