    Windows update error; 0x800f0988

    Hi all,

I'm new here so apologise in advance if this is the wrong place, or if I miss something... But here goes. And thanks for having me!

    Win version; 2004 (19041.630)

I've been struggling for weeks up update Win10, this is the error code 0x800f0988.
This is the update; 2021-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4601319)
    Windows update error; 0x800f0988-capture.png

It downloads in a fraction of a second (unlikely), and then on the install hangs on 20% for a bit, then 73% for less time, then 100%. Then error.

    I've ran the Windows Troubleshooter and get;
    Windows update error; 0x800f0988-capture2.png

    • I've tried excluding it from the DEP (Data Execution Protection), but you can't set DEP attributes on x64 executables.
    • I've restarted the services, following; https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...1-5712477faf4e
    • I've followed this; Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 and ran the bat file
    • I've tried manually downloading the files from the widows catalogue, and installing it, the progress bar looks to hang at 20% ish to, but it failed after it reached 100%.
    • I've even tried Restoro which I regret, the free scan highlighted a fixable issue with WaasMerdic.exe so I paid the subscription and ran it.
    • enabled 'download over metered connections'

    I'm completely stuck now...
Any helps appreciated. So thanks in advance.

Have you tried going directly to the 20H2 feature update which is shown underneath?
Have you tried updating via the media creation tool?
Have you removed all external USB devices apart from mouse & keyboard?

Have you tried resetting the update components?
Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
    Net Stop bits
    Net Stop wuauserv
    Net Stop appidsvc
    Net Stop cryptsvc
    Ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
    Ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
    Net Start bits
    Net Start wuauserv
    Net Start appidsvc
    Net Start cryptsvc
Restart the PC & try updating again.

    And/or:
Search for services.msc & find Windows Update & ensure it is set to Automatic.

Thanks Bastet, I haven't tried the other update since trying quick a few of the steps alI tried above, so will try again now.
Never heard of the media creation tool.
Never realised the USB items could be in issue.
Will remove and try both updates now. (gimme 10-15 mins)

    Thanks

It usually only affects clean installs or major updates but it’s worth doing this if a user is having problems. It seems if any external drives are connected at the time then Windows can install some update files on this for some reason.
You can use the media creation tool to either upgrade Windows or to create installation media on USB or DVD for future installation or repair.

Okay so USBs removed (webcam and elgato capture card).
Ran the Bat file mentioned here; Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
    which restarts the services.
    Restart
Update still fails, and hangs in the same %

Downloaded Creation Tool, its running 'Update my PC' now.

    Hello and Welcome

Why didn't they use the fix from the thread?

Since you are performing the in-place upgrade, it no longer matters.

    Friendly greetings

    Hi Tekkie Boy,

I wasn’t aware of the repair install option.

I believe that is what I’m currently doing via the creation tool. It stated “keep files and apps”, and its been going for sometime now.
Replying on my phone, as its taking a while (19%)

Yes you’re now running an in-place repair.
Glad to hear it’s worked. You should now be running Windows 10 20H2.

    Correct! 20H2.

This has been bugging me for weeks, so honestly, thank you.
I use this PC to connect to my works Citrix so making sure my Windows is up to date for security, etc is important.
