From a command prompt (as admin) run:
sfc /scannow




Also... from a command prompt (as admin)... run these commands, one at a time...

net stop wuauserv
rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
net start wuauserv

If Windows refuses to terminate Windows Update service, try to reboot the machine and repeat the steps given above.

Yeah, check Windows Updates again.

Exactly what version of Windows 10 are you using?
In the taskbar search box type: winver and then hit ENTER

For example I am on version 19042.844

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.




Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.


The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Some have reported that it gets stuck on a low percentage for a bit, then jumps to 100%.




If nothing we do fixes it, don't be afraid of an In-Place Upgrade. I had to do it back in June 2020 for a Windows Update problem. All it does is express reinstall Windows, while keeping your programs and files intact.

In my case, and the cases of many others... it fixed their Windows Update problems.

In my case, I was stuck. Nothing I tried would allow me to move from v1909 to v2004. An In-Place upgrade fixed that.
Haven't had any update problems since then.

On my computer, it only took about 40 minutes total. And that included downloading the MCT and making the ISO image.
