    KB4023057 install error 0x8024001e

This update is stuck at 0% downloading. I thought I would try and install it by downloading it from the catalog but I can't find it listed for machines with Windows 10 64bit 20H2

What should I do to troubleshoot this?

From a command prompt (as admin) run:
    sfc /scannow

Also... from a command prompt (as admin)... run these commands, one at a time...

    net stop wuauserv
    rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    net start wuauserv

If Windows refuses to terminate Windows Update service, try to reboot the machine and repeat the steps given above.

If that doesn't work, try this...

Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

Ghot thank you for your reply. I ran those command prompts and also tried to change the name of
that folder to.old in the order you listed.

I did not succeed in stopping the Windows update and could
not rename the folder because it was ‘in use’.

I am trying again this AM after a shut down. Do I attempt to do the update again after all these steps? It must be a bad patch if it’s been pulled from the catalogue?

How do I check if it’s still stuck in the loop without opening windows update in settings?

    Yeah, check Windows Updates again.

If you're still getting the error... then try the tutorial at the bottom.

    @Alicia J

Exactly what version of Windows 10 are you using?
In the taskbar search box type: winver and then hit ENTER

For example I am on version 19042.844

If worse comes to worst and you get to the point where you think a reinstall of Windows is needed, try an In-Place Upgrade, first...

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

    The version is 20H2 19042.804

The update is now at 1% and not progressing. I will leave it running while I am away from the computer and report back. Thanks for all the information and your help.

Some have reported that it gets stuck on a low percentage for a bit, then jumps to 100%.

If nothing we do fixes it, don't be afraid of an In-Place Upgrade. I had to do it back in June 2020 for a Windows Update problem. All it does is express reinstall Windows, while keeping your programs and files intact.

In my case, and the cases of many others... it fixed their Windows Update problems.

In my case, I was stuck. Nothing I tried would allow me to move from v1909 to v2004. An In-Place upgrade fixed that.
Haven't had any update problems since then.

On my computer, it only took about 40 minutes total. And that included downloading the MCT and making the ISO image.

Error encountered 0x80244018 retry is what I came back to after running the update for several hours.

I tried the retry and it is back to 1% downloaded. I can leave it run again and follow the steps you listed if it doesn't work.

    Hello Alicia

Error code 0x80244018 means WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_FORBIDDEN - HTTP 403 - server understood the request, but declined to fulfill it.

    Please try this:

Press the Windows Button, type cmd and then select the Option "Run as administrator".

In the command prompt run the following command (copy and paste in the command prompt):
    sc config wuauserv start= disabled

    Restart the computer.

Then open the command prompt as administrator again and then run the following commands:

    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak

    sc config wuauserv start= auto

    net start bits

    net start wuauserv

Then open the Windows Settings - Updates & Security - Windows Updates and click on "Check for updates".

I immediately got rid of the KB4023057 update after it attempted to install on my dad's Toshiba laptop running Win10 Home build 19041.804 without any intervention (it's now listed as "Microsoft Update Health Tools" in the Programs & Features control panel)

Microsoft keeps issuing/revising KB4023057 from time to time

saw this older topic from this forum regarding KB4023057.
