Windows 20H2 update not appearing when I check for updates

I just recently successfully (at least as far as all updates reported successful conclusion) the 1909 -> 2004 update. I repeatedly queried windows update and installed anything it provided and now I'm allegedly up to date.

Yet my destkop and my wife's laptop are now 20H2 update. And I don't see it.

I ran windows update troubleshooter and it admitted it couldn't identify the problem and I got this error value:
0x80070483

History:
This machine started out with Win 7 (Home or Pro I'm a bit vague on now). I had a tech upgrade me to Win 10 and I think that was in the 18xx time frame of Win10. I updated without a problem that I noticed to 1909 a fair while back. The new update to 2004 looked good and I saw no errors when I looked at the log after the update (though the number of updates is just a handful and I don't see anything from back before the 2004 update but I assume that's expected).

So, my real question is why don't I see 20H2 update but a secondary question is why my update troubleshooter doesn't work (or maybe it did work and just couldn't figure out the solution, but they why the error code?)... I want to get to Win 20H2.

I ran the script - I did see some files at the end of the deletions that weren't found and the I saw another indication of failure, but the script cleared the text in the command window buffer (in some way) and so I lost the detail. At any rate, the system restarted.

However, when I restart, I did 'check for updates' and still get 'up to date' despite being on release 2004.

If it would be helpful, I will try to run the script and direct the outcome to a text file to capture detail if I can.

Please try this:
Press the Windows Button, type cmd and then select the option "Run as administrator".
In the command prompt run the following command:

%windir%\system32\compattelrunner.exe

Then please wait until the command prompt accepts a command again.
Then close the command prompt window and restart the computer.After restart check whether you get the Feature Update 20h2 displayed after an update search.

I ran the command (though with no output, I couldn't tell you what it did). When it went to the command prompt again, I ran a restart.

I then ran 'windows update' and checked for updates. A printer update went in for my canon printer. That's it. Now it says up to date.

Now, just to mention:

Windows Update lists a 10+ optional updates that seem to be driver updates.
I've been leery of any updates of those sorts (mobo chipset ones) because if one of them goes bad... I'm no sure the manufacturer's bios recovery will work (no way to test after a larger disk replaced the original 2-3 years ago). If one of them borks, the machine might be toast. Also, I'm a bit skeptical because a bunch of these updates mention Xeon in the update name and I do not have a Xeon in the laptop (it's an i7 early gen - an MSI GE 70 OND from about 2012.

Is there any possibility that there's a hardware issue? Is it possible this hardware can't go any further than 2004 release? That would be unfortunate. I can't afford new hardware now.

However, being a video, that doesn't let you copy the command strings readily.

I've not seen anything useful on tenforums for that error number.

Without much explanation, I'm a bit leery to just fire up something I don't really have much of an idea what/why is being executed....

Why not just download the ISO file and upgrade manually? In fact, I'm on 21H1.

The hardware requirements for 20h2 are the same as for 2004 and also for the upcoming 21h1 update.

The short answer is that wasn't the first place I'd start. Updates were working fine up (as far as I noticed or can tell now) up until now and even now, there's no indications (other than in running the Update Troubleshooter) that there's any problem ... it just doesn't list 20H2 ... and my concern was if I update manually (assuming I do it right though I've never done this), subsequent updates might not automatically function (specifically - if it isn't giving me 20H2... what else isn't being given to me?).

Before I'd try that, I'd need to be able to dump 1 TB of stuff of my disk onto some other drive (and make sure one if it was in the encrypted directories Windows loves to use). Then I'd maybe feel safe enough to try that.

I did notice in the Windows Update something about freshening windows such that the OS files would all be replaced but the data files would stay. Is that the same as what you're thinking? Or is it a complete reinstall? Or some third thing that isn't either of those? I've also read about running Windows Repair, but again... not familiar with this stuff because I've never needed it before now... I'm afraid of borking the system.

I guess I'm in a situation where I should start the process of migrating all my data onto an external drive. That'll take time, esp if I have to spelunk the places where Windows buries stuff in AppData etc.

I have a desktop that has had a bunch of failed updates (a 2018 i5 machine) and once updates started failing, more that related failed and I can't get it onto 2004 (the update runs time after time to no effect but not bright enough to stop trying). I'm in the process of moving data off of it too.

With my laptop having not updated gracefully this time and the desktop not having updated smoothly on that more modern machine (Gigabyte Mobo in that one)... I'm feeling like Windows isn't doing a very good job on its updates. I've got Ubuntu machines that roll update after update with all the app updates and I've yet to see a significant update failure there. I'm getting pretty disappointed by Windows 10.
