cheer i downloaded correct version (64 bit) but i got winrar file which when i unzipped had a load of manifest files, file folders, mum files, security catalog but no Cab file i can see. i may go back and try download again.
For me, the cab file automatically downloaded into a Folder named "Dynamic Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081440)". The cabinet file is the only thing I have inside that folder.

The cabinet name I have is "all-windows10.0-kb3081440-x64_9644f810d969d34b3a1ac7c8f9aea71c0a9089bc.cab".

The cabinet contains tons of files including lots of manifest and *.dll (library) files etc etc etc

    KB3081440 and KB3081444 caused the update/loop error

Not saying it will work, but Microsoft released kb3081440 as a fix for the update/loop error. Have you tried it?

Kb3081440 Microsoft Compatibility update for upgrading to Windows 10 Summary
Kb3081440 Download from Microsoft Download Catalog

Oddly I was fine until this morning when KB3081440 and KB3081444 were installed on my laptop, after which I started seeing this endless loop under which my whole Windows session is useless. I have failed my first attempt at doing a system restore (which I had to reboot and then do shift-Restart from the signon screen to get to). I am now trying the 2nd restore point which actually is earlier this month when I upgraded to Windows 10. I won't allow any more Windows updates until this has been fixed.

The second system restore point failed with an unspecified error (0x8000ffff). Going to see what other options I have.

    Correction

It was KB3081441 and KB3081444 that messed things up, not 1440 and 1444.

Also, the failed system restore actually worked. I signed in after the 2nd failed restore and I was back to the point I was at when I upgraded to Win10 from Win7 earlier this month.

Windows update is downloading these two as well as KB2267602 (Windows Defender update). I am reluctant to allow the installation of 1441 and 1444 until I see from forum topics that this issue really is fixed once and for all.

My laptop is in working order again so I see no risk if these are the only 3 updates I don't have applied.

That means you may have either misspelt the path or used the invalid directory in to which the cab file was originally downloaded.

Did you create a new folder called c:\TempCab and put the cab in there?
If you do that then the command line is:
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\TempCab\all-windows10.0-kb3081440-x64_9644f810d969d34b3a1ac7c8f9aea71c0a9089bc.cab
Just copy and paste it into the command prompt (admin) EXACTLY as above, and it should work. :)

ok copy and paste worked and i got completed successfully (cant believe i had something wrong, checked over and over)
so kb 3081440 now shows as installed , unfortunately the cumulative update kb 3081444 kicked in again and has failed with the "undoing changes" message again.
il wait on fix but many many thanks for your help , i learnt a bit too.

I'm pretty sure this update hosed me, after installing it, upon reboot, my screen kept flickering as if a bad display driver was installed. I could not input my password, because the screen would flicker and reset back to the Lockscreen. Even on the two occasions when I was able to enter my password, it would not log me in, going straight back to the lock screen. I need to avoid installing this or delete it somehow after Windows installs it for me.
