    Flash and Windows Updates

    Hello

    I have Windows 20H2 Build 1902

Somebody told me that eventually, one of the Windows updates will remove Flash from my PC. The problem is I have a very old program that I need flash to run it. This is an email client (Incredimail - which no longer updates) and without flash it won't even open. Is there a way I can prevent that from happening? or is that even true?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Regards

    Loopy

There were two methods to install flash: windows and non-windows

If it was Windows KB4577586 was designed to remove it.

If it was non-windows there is no plan to uninstall it:

Thanks for the quick reply and now I will sound like a complete idiot. How would I go about finding out how it was installed? I would assume it would have came with windows and I did see a list of some of the windows updates but couldn't find the particular one you mentioned. I don't like the idea of them just being able to remove something from my computer. That's kind of weird and like an invasion of my personal space.

    Thanks again

You could try searching for flashplayer from the taskar or from Apps & Features or looking in your browser downloads (if you haven't cleared the history). I think that's a logical and sensible question.

The above is based on finding KB4577586 in your Windows Update history. This would have uninstalled the embedded Windows Flash installation.

I have my PC fixed such that I manage Windows Updates and after the above KB failed to install, I downloaded it directly from MS and installed it manually.

There's a specific KB file for different OS/versions.
    2004 x64 is on page 2

I still had to uninstall the non-imbedded FlashPlayer app using Revo Uninstaller, hence 2 types of the Flash files.

Thank you so much W10 Tweaker.

I checked my windows update history and could not find that particular KB file so maybe I did install it myself somewhere along the line. Hope they don't somehow bring it back again as I don't want to lose it and I don't want to lose my mail client.

Thanks again for you help. Much appreciated.

    You're most welcome.

The chances are very strong and most likely that the Microsoft KB to remove Flash will be back and cycled periodically. This KB is used only to uninstall the version of Flash that's embedded in Windows.

I don't know for certain but if I had to guess, I'd think that Incredimail doesn't rely on the embedded version of Flash, so either way, your Incredimail should continue to function.

Another alternative search method to locate Flash is to download and use Everything Search from Void Tools. I use the portable version that doesn't require installation. It's very very fast and precise.

    You're welcome and thanks.

Many of us just enjoy fixing Windows things. My position, that ran me ragged at Rogers for decades, magically became redundant in 2014 (big shocker) and there's only so many technical issues to fix in my house, my Mom's house, friends houses, friends of friends houses....

This place gives me an outlet.

I live in the South-West corner of Rural Ottawa (RMOC) bordering Kemptville/Burritt's Rapids. The lockdown is presently Ontario wide other than Northern Ontario areas, I believe.

Keep us posted if you make any discoveries using Everything Search utility. And if you decide that your questions in this thread have been answered, please mark the thread as 'Solved'. This might help another user searching for the same issue. Cheers,
