    Windows Update KB4598291 error 0x80073701

I am running windows 10 Home and I am also a Windows Insider. Late last year some updates came out and have caused me some issues. Currently my issue won't let me upgrade to windows 10 Pro. The update in question is KB4598291 and it always gives me error 0x80073701. I have tried everything except wiping and clean install. currently 20H2 19042.546 windows feature experience pack 120.212.21.0 I have made space on hard drive, ran commands from prompt, tried manually, etc. I hve not tried removing old updates cuz I don't know order to uninstall to not have issues? Does anyone have any ideas to help a recently retired guy out? I hav ran this update like almost 10 times and fail.

Have you tried running sfc /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
...from a command prompt, as admin?

If you have and they came up clean, you should try an In-Place Upgrade.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

(This is NOT an upgrade from Home to Pro. This is a repair that keeps your programs and data)

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

I did try those commands. I will try your upgrade method. Its just an annoyance knowing i have an unsolved issue. I'll let you know if it works. Did you say it saves programs or only files?

    Thanks.

Neither of the last two cumulative updates will install for me.
I have tried just about everything suggested and then some.
I am just hoping the next windows refresh will get me squared away at this point.

its is quite maddening. I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 Pro now and this issue is preventing me from moving to a more capable version of windows 10. Grrrrr......

I don't know if me being an insider did it or just some glitch? I cannot even leave insider program, that is goofed up too.

I do not want to wipe and do a clean install but we will see?

For some reason when updating my windows it said i may be using an older version of windows 10 so It wont save my files and programs? Weird.

It will save all your installed programs and files. The only thing you might lose is some personalizations.
Personalizations are things like wallpaper, color schemes, taskbar settings, etc.

I had the same problem back in July 2020. Windows started tossing up errors for updates, etc.
I did an in-place upgrade and everything has been fine, since.

As for upgrading to Win 10 Pro... you need to get Win 10 Home working first. Once that is fixed, then you should have no problem upgrading to Win 10 Pro.

Looks like that 4598291 has been removed from the update site. Do not loose faith, it might be solved soon.

Hope it helps on my end also. Everything I have tried has failed.
I am stuck on 19042.630. It won't even let me do an in place repair, have to have a later version to perform even that.

"If you have Windows 10 version 20H2 installed, then it is required to have KB4586853 for build 19042.662 or higher installed to be able to do a repair install and keep everything. " This quote at bottom of link is what put me on the right path. Eternally Grateful.

    Kb4598291

The way that I fixed this bug is by cloning my machine from a working one as this KB4598291 had bricked my #1 desktop. Hey MS, there must be a fix to this update.
Last time that I tried it, it would not even let me boot the machine again. The ball-bearing went around for < 1 hour then I killed it with the grid switch. Welcome clone.
