    New User - Update Problems

I finally have enough time to set up a new custom built Windows 10 machine. The last time I tried I shelved the project because updating failed.

    I can see that I am currently running Win10 Pro/x64 Version 10.0.18962 Build 18632.

I've attached iPhone photos of the screen, the best I can do as there is obvious work to do to get the new machine into a useful state. If the first upload is too small to see, I hope the second of the most recent information about updates makes sense.

    What should I do next?

    thanks

Hi, noting your error number 0x80071a91 you might start by following this:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

then using the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Try running that 2 or 3 times.

    See:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-184277e7bc34
    - where some had success.

Your disk configuration looks a little complex:
    2 Crucial 128 Gb SSD (CT128M550SSD1) one mounted and running Win7/Pro x64 one disconnected containing only Win10/Pro upgrade - in process 1 1TB WD Caviar Black (WD1003FZEX-00MK2A0) (Data drive) 1 2TB Seagate 2TB (PN/ 9JB1N3-576 - ST2000DM001-1ER
    - ensure you try this - in particular any upgrade- with only the Win 10 system disk in place.

Please confirm your PC boots to Win 10 with only 1 system disk connected, and for confirmation all partitions for Win 10 are on the same physical disk, post a screenshot using a 3rd party partition manager (not Disk management) such as Minitool Partition Manager.

We have a lot of people having problems updating old out if support versions all have done a clean install of the latest version with no problems

Thanks - Best Tutorial to Clean Install Over My OEM Version

Thank you Samuria and Dalchina for your suggestions.

When I checked the System Spec in my Profile, I learned that I can include 2 System Spec files in my Profile. I realized I hadn't created one for my new desktop. I have remedied that shortcoming.

Since I've not invested significant time in installing software and configuring the system it makes sense to me to try the Clean Install route using the most recent version. Experience tells me that I will need 'just the right terms' to select the best tutorial to do this right the first time.

Please post a link to one that should work.

    thanks,

    Very short version...

    Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

...and under Create Windows 10 installation Media... download the Media Creation Tool.
Use this tool to create a USB stick for installing Windows 10.
When ready to install, unhook the internet, and all drives that you DON'T want to install Win 10 on.
    Install Windows 10
When you get to the desktop... install all the motherboard drivers (chipset first), then install the vid card driver.
(You should download these drivers first, before starting the Windows 10 install)

THEN you can rehook the internet, and do any remaining Windows Updates.
THEN you can hook up your other drives.

THEN..... MAKE A FULL OS IMAGE BACKUP, with a free program like Macrium Reflect.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Also, here is the formal tutorial...

    Clean Install Windows 10
