20H2. How to properly disable Windows Updates? Sleep broken

20H2 has aggressive windows update behavior which prevents the pc from going to sleep automatically.

According to google, whenever there is a pending update, it disables sleep. My pc is set to sleep after 20 minutes idle, but it will run the whole day because of the windows update bug.

I tried to disable windows update using a method which worked in 1909- by setting Windows update service to logon as regular user without privileges.
This broke windows updates so that it couldn't phone home.

Now, in 20h2, the aggressive update medic will revert Windows Updates logon back to SYSTEM, undoing any workaround you used.

Is there a proper way to shut down windows updates and preventing it from fixing itself?

I want to run updates manually on my own schedule, and keep sleep mode working.

so your script makes windows completely blind to updates?

I've always had the connection set to metered, but it still looks for updates
and whenever there are updates available, it does not let my pc sleep.
it's supposedly an issue with MoUsoCoreWorker.exe

This script will bypass the mousocoreworker sleep issue?

The other idea I was thinking is... set task scheduler sleep task after 20 minutes idle.
But I read that isn't very reliable.

I also use 20H2, and my PC can always sleep well.
The scripts will stop automatic download and installation of updates.
The scripts will notify you of available updates and let you decide what to do.
You have to set connections as metered via a Registry hack, and the scripts will do so automatically.

I tried your script followed directions set network cards as metered installed tasks to check for updates however, MoUsoCoreWorker.exe still running/preventing sleep after update KB5000842 and service stacking 10.0.19041.903

UPDATE: I checked again after 5 mins of rebooting system and MoUsoCoreWorker.exe has stopped now. Thanks again!

Note this question is asked time and again... on tenforums you can find:

    a. a whole tutorial on this

    b. many threads about disabling Windows updates.

Try using tenforums as a research resource- searching it can be useful.

A useful trick is to search thus to find a particular tutorial:

You don't stand a chance of answering so many questions if users do their own search/research.

If it reappears, have a look at this thread, it has helped others . . .

    I hope this helps.
