    Question on update from Win 10 v 2004 to v 20H2

    My daughter updated her Win 10 v 1909 to 20H2 and had major operational issues. I have v 2004 and am reluctant to make the update. Dell tech told her that in order for her to install 20H2 she would need to format her SSD HD and reinstall windows or use Media Creation tool. Am I looking at the same issues or is it not an issue if one has v 2004 installed.

    Hi, things can go wrong in any upgrade, and upgrade failures can be next to impossible to resolve.

    That could apply from 1909 to 20H2, as 1909 -> 2004 is a major upgrade, whereas 2004-> 20H2 is a minor upgrade.

    The first upgrade in a year is a complete replacement of all system files, the second is accomplished in a manner more like an update.

    Ideally either case would go smoothly. It just sounds as if it may have failed in your daughter's case.

    As ever, take due precautions before upgrading. Make sure you have a current disk image, so you can revert to a previous good state even if things go horribly wrong, and even after the 10 days (extendable to 60) allowed to 'Go back to the previous build'. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free-paid) + large enough external storage for image files. Many benefits of routine disk imaging.

    2004 was never offered via Windows Update for my 2012 Dell Inspiron 660, W10 v1909. Had to use 2004 ISO (downloaded in early October) for 2004 upgrade on Dec 2. Dell ran great with 2004.

    20H2 upgrade was offered via Windows Update on Jan 5; upgrade only took 15 minutes. Dell runs great with 20H2. Good luck.
