    Automatic updates

    W10 Home version 10.0.19042

Back in the day, I was never on auto updates. I always wanted to know first what each available update was about and it was up to me to install or not. Now with W10, updates are installed automatically (except optional drivers). The only way to know what they are is post-installation through update history.

Is there a way to tweak around this to be able to manage updates installation the good old W7 method?

Hello, time and again various free utilities have been mentioned here for some years which
    a. disable Windows Update
    b. let you manually scan for and select updates

This is a frequent and often recurring topic. Feel free to search tenforums for more.

    Examples:
    Wumgr (Windows Update Manager)
    WUMT (Windows Update Minitool)
Sledgehammer (older more cumbersome script which includes these)

See also this tutorial, in particular Option 7 - another utility:
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

Win 10 Pro has a couple more useful options.

From 20H2, feature updates are not applied automatically until end of life cycle. Or that's what MS claims.
Further, driver updates become optional only and the Device Manager scan for updates no longer works.

Feature updates and driver updates can be prevented by metered connection, which is more reliable than MS' claims.

Now that FUs are only automatic at EOL, I have WU paused and watch the forum reviews of the CUs and other KBs to see if there is any reason to avoid them. If I think it’s time, I run a system image save and unpause WU. I currently have WU paused until 02/14/2021.
