    Windows Product Key Classification

    Hi all,

I cannot turn on my laptop due to an issue on disk so the device shuts down quickly.
My question is I have windows product key sticker at least and I hope to use this one in a fresh installation.
But the problem is Im not sure if this license works on a different device or not.
Is it possible to see what type of windows license I have through a Microsoft page or something else?

    Thank you

p.s: License belongs to windows 8 and upgraded to windows 10 previously

Was the laptop purchased new, refurbished, or unknown seller?

Have you found the faulty hardware?

Did you want to repair the laptop?

Did you only want to determine whether the OS was OEM or retail?

    Hi zbook,

    Thank you for the reply.
It was purchased new. Not only disk and also there is an issue on mainboard so the new laptop is free-Dos and I want to use the OS on the new one if possible. Unfortunately I have nothing but product key so I need to figure out if this key works on a new installation or have to buy a new windows license.

An OEM license on a notebook is only for the individual computer.

It will be marked on the COA sticker on the laptop if it is OEM or Retail. You can run the product key through showkey plus and it will tell you if it is Retail or OEM:
    ShowKeyPlus
