    Windows 10 Update

Several days ago I tried to install the new Windows 10 cumulative update (KB4592438) on my five Windows 10 computers. This update installed fine on four of my machines, but I am having problems with the installation on one of my Windows 10 desktops, where I keep receiving Error Code 0x80070017 before the installation is complete. I have tried several things suggested online, but to no avail. Has anyone else had this problem? What should I do to successfully install update KB4592438? Windows Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.685).

Hello ctnance and welcome to TF ,
Try downloading the file directly and installing it. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4592438
You probably want this one: 2020-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB4592438)

I tried using the Microsoft Update Catalog, but the update would not install. Someone on Facebook suggested deleting all the files from the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistritution folder and then resuming Windows Updates.

The Reset doesn't delete the Software Distribution Folder contents like your Facebook suggestion, it renames it .bak. Same for others. In essence same as deleting, but on the safe side. Then also resets network and services for updating.

So give it a try, and we'll go from there.

The strange oddity I'm having with KB4592438 is that the stand-alone update correctly tells me that it's installed, yet if I add or remove any features from Windows and then invoke Windows Update, 2020-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB4592438) gets downloaded and installed.

Anyone seen this one? Why does Windows Update re-apply the update? Does not deem to be causing any issues.

I have a similar problem with automatic updates on Windows 10 Pro

My current build is reported as 10.0.18363 Windows 10 Pro. Automatic updates has installed 30 updates it categorizes as "Quality" successfully, including version 1909, but "Feature" updates keep failing, most recently reporting "Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004 (2)" without failure, but "Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 (4)" with a fail code of 0xc1900204.

I don't know what KB number it's trying to install. All I see is this in the update history:

    Windows 10 Update-clipboard02.jpg

I tried looking at the setupact.log file and the only reference to failures was this

WinReSetTriggerFile failed to delete file (0x2) in file base\diagnosis\srt\reagent2\reagent\logfile.cpp line 237

    a bunch of times.

How do I find which specific KB is failing in the automatic updates so I could try a standalone installation? I tried all the recommendations from Microsoft to troubleshoot failed updates, including stopping and restarting services but nothing works for me.

It's quite likely it's this Enablement KB:

KB4562830 Enablement Package Feature Update to Windows 10 version 20H2

There are .msu packages for it.

Verify you are downloading the correct one. An i5-4570 is gonna be x64, the second one listed.
