Windows Update will not open in Settings

    WINDOWS 10 HOME VERSION 2004

Windows Update page in settings merely says "Something went wrong. Try to reopen settings later".
This happened a week ago and is unchanged since then, it happened after waking the laptop from sleep in the morning when I was faced with a black screen and nothing happening.
I did manage to restart it eventually but I don't remember exactly how.
I think it may have been trying, or maybe failing, to update overnight.
Everything else seems to be OK.

I thought I would go to a Restore Point prior to then but was surprised to find 8 points dated 01/12/2020 (from 21.37) and another 55 points dated 02/12/2020 (up to 23.47) - a period of over 24 hours !
I have checked what stuff will be either deleted or restored if I go back to the first point and can cope I think.

So is using a restore point a reasonable way to fix this ?

Hi, it's extremely unlikely you would have that many restore points - something sounds amiss. Normally I'd say yes, try one- but I think first run some basic checks.

You have a laptop with a single HDD. First check your disk. Try the portable trial version here:
    Download Hard Disk Sentinel
    - you can run that from a flash drive.
HD Sentinel gives the best instant report I know.

    If ok, then run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt.

    If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

If that's ok, you can try the Windows Update Troubleshooter and post a screenshot of what it says.

    Then you can try resetting

    and re-registering Settings:

    Thanks dalchina.

I meant to say that all those restore points are labelled "Windows Modules Installer" under Description and "Install" under Type.

    Does that make a difference?

That might suggest many failed attempts to apply an update.
Have a look at your Update History.

But the astonishing number of restore points- if they are valid- would suggest you have allocated a vast amount of disk space to System Restore.

I had suspected a failed update.

Update history doesn't work, in fact nothing works on the Settings > Windows Update page.

Update troubleshooter found nothing wrong but gave the report in the attachments.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the HDD since everything is fine except for anything to do with updates.

I am thinking either (1) restore, or more drastically (2) Recovery / Reset

The laptop is only 5 weeks old so I can reluctantly cope with the latter.

Try Control Panel, Programs and Features, Installed Updates

Given where you are you should work through my post #2 as a matter of course.

If all goes well and you find you have multiple problems, and you haven't yet started to use disk imaging regularly and routinely as is so very often recommended here, you can proceed straight to an in-place upgrade repair install (tutorial available) which keeps all progs and data.

As you have build 2004 you will need a 2004 iso file (tutorial). Use the Heidoc iso downloader.

This is different to the instructions in Windows own help pages regarding the cmd prompt method.

They don't mention cryptSVc or msi server, but only wuauserv and bits.

And, in particular, in your suggested step 4, why are we stopping 3 things for a second time ?
Surely we should be re-starting them having stopped them in step 1 ?

    Yes.
So I don't intend to trust those particular instructions. Am I right ?
