Windows 10 updates not installing in off hours

On a Windows 10 home laptop I have the windows updates set to install during 'off hours' which I set to be during the night hours.

Well, during the night the laptop lid is shut down. I could be wrong, but I get the impression that the downloaded updates do not install at night because on checking for updates during the day I frequently find that the updates were downloaded but seemingly waiting for me to 'restart the laptop' to install. So I restart the laptop and the updates are installed.

So, my question is, do the windows 10 updates actually install when the laptop lid is down and windows is (not shut down) but asleep (whatever the correct word is)? If not what is the point of setting 'off hours'?

    Thanks.

Check Power Options to see what the computer does when the lid is closed.

Control Panel > PowerOptions > Choose what closing the lid does

The laptop is not plugged in at night.
I could also be wrong. It is just an impression I have that it is not installing.

My earlier message got deleted. Closing the lid is set to sleep.

So the problem is that wake timers are disabled when running on battery only.

This is to keep the computer from overheating if it's in a bag.

Plug it in and you should get updates.

    Thanks.
Of course that will kill the battery...
    Ah well.
(Any way to enable the wake timers? I never carry it in a bag).

Not if it's on battery...that's a protection mechanism.

I have my laptop plugged in 24x7, and the battery is fine.

    Thanks.
At least that explains what was happening.
    I appreciate the help.
