How Do Updates Resume After Being Paused?

I have been pausing updates for up to 35 days. When the specified day finally arrives, I do not see any activity after going to Settings, Update & Security.

Yesterday I waited 20 minutes after boot to see if any activity would start automatically. I checked Services and Windows Update was running.

Clicking "Resume Updates" does start the process and I then see the various updates that will download and install.

Is it possible that updates are downloading in the background or would updates resume the following day?

I'm running Windows 10 Home, Version 1909, OS Build 18363.1198

Consider performing a manual Windows 10 upgrade with a windows 10 iso:

Decide whether you want to upgrade to 20H1 or 20H2.

Download the applicable iso to the desktop:

    2004 or 20H2:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    2009 or 20H1:
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

Perform an in place upgrade repair:

    Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure there is a problem as both of my computers behave the same way.

I click "Resume Updates" on the day the pause ends to get the process started and the updates download and install without problem.

It's just not clear whether the updates would download in the background without any action on my part or whether anything displays prior to the required reset.

On the day the pause ends I was expecting to see activity in Settings, Update & Security similar to what I see after clicking on "Resume Updates". It's also possible I need to wait longer than 20 minutes.

This makes me wonder what displays for those updating automatically without any pause.

Windows Update checks approximately every 17 to 22 hours.

So it simply may not have hit the check point yet.

They will automatically resume at the next "Check for updates" that Windows performs by itself.

Thanks all for the additional replies. I had a feeling that updates would eventually start on their own.

The 17 to 22 hours seems longer than necessary although I read that Windows update checks randomly to reduce peak loads on their servers.

I'll wait after my next pause date and see when update actually resumes operation.

In the past, I’ve had WU go as long as two days without checking for updates. I always thought it was due to my system being shutdown every night. I now keep WU paused all the time until I feel comfortable with what is being updated. It is currently paused until 01/09/2012. Every time I unpause WU, it immediately looks for updates.
