    KB4586781 won't install error 0x80073701

    Windows 10 Prof
    Windows 2004 (OS Build 19041.610

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4586781) downloads, installs and at 100% says "There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80073701)". I've tried several times over several days and always land up in the same place.

Ran sfc /scannow and it reported no errors.
Ran Dism /Online /Cleaup-Image /Scanhealth and received msg No Component Store Corruption Detected. The Operation
    Completed Successfully.

What should I do next - hoping not to have a mess on my hands. I did recently replace Office 2010 with Office 2016 which appeared to go smoothly. Also installed Super Anti Spyware but set not to run in the background. Eset NOD is my AV.
    Thanks.

    Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
    • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot
    • Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter

    Download Windows updates manually.

    • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
    • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
    • Select the correct version and click Download
    • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the troubleshooter and it said it couldn't find any problems. But then I noticed there was an arrow for details and got this:
    KB4586781 won't install error 0x80073701-image.png
I stopped here because I have no idea what the BITS Service is and wanted to find out before I started messing with it. I don't understand where I'm supposed to type "NETHELPMSG 2182" If you could explain and tell me how to proceed from here, would be much appreciated.

Also should note that for at least two years the first line on Windows Update Screen is in red and says "Some settings are managed by your organization". I am my organization. Here are the settings just in case they are now causing problems?

    Thanks a lot.

BITS is Background Intelligent Transfer Service
It's a Service. Just type Services in the taskbar search box. It should be set to Manual, normally.

Hi, have you ever done anything to disable Windows Update or used a so-called privacy tool for example?

Also should note that for at least two years the first line on Windows Update Screen is in red and says "Some settings are managed by your organization". I am my organization.
Simply reflects that either a group policy or a registry change equivalent to a group ploicy has been made.
Search for that error message and you will find many references. It's only meaningful where Pro systems are managed by an IT dept, but appears if the above applies anyway for individual users.

If concerned, you have Pro, so can use the Group Policy editor to reset enabled policies if you wish.
The first 2 policies should not be an issue. It's unclear what the 3rd represents.

Try this which helps to reset services too:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

and if no joy try Tweaking.com's free repair tool, choosing only the relevant repairs. (Google).
This has helped some with Windows Update.

    Error code 0x80073701 means ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING.

Perform a In-place Upgrade with a 20h2 Iso or download a 2004 Iso from there: TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

No luck getting windows to update

Thanks to all for your help. Best wishes for a good and hopefully safe, Thanksgiving

As per all the above suggestions:
Bits was not running and was set to manual

I updated manually and at the end of the update I was told that some updates were not installed. I saw no way to find out which updates those might be )-

Then ran Windows Update using Brink's .bat file. As the commands raced across my screen I saw something about a file not found but much too fast to read. But when it was done my windows update said I was up to date and all looked great.

Closed and restarted. Windows Update was back telling me I needed the same update. I updated but it didn't work and threw the same error message as always.

I didn't yet try tweaking.com repair tool. Should that be the next step?

The third group policy change I created a few years ago seems to stop automatic updates. I don't know how to undo it because I don't know what I did.... As it is now, I do get a notification that I need updates and I update usually within a week or so of receiving the notification. It hasn't been a problem in the past although if I knew how, I set it back to the default to eliminate a possible issue.

Thanks to all and would appreciate suggestions/confirmations of my next step.

Sounds like you've set updates to Notify.

You can view configured updates quite readily - tutorial available.

If you don't know how to navigate to that policy, Policy Plus (free) has a useful 'Find' feature:

You can try Tweaking.com's tool, if if still no joy, proceed to the next step, which as Tekkie Boy indicated would be an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data, or just do that anyway.

They should have no impact on group policy settings.

Trying to set everything back in the hopes it will resolve this. I found Group Policy Editor. Under Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update, everything is not configured Except:
    Configure Automatic Updates is enabled
Do Not Include Drivers with Windows Updates

Configure automatic updates was set to notify before downloading and installing. The notes said that the default is #3 which is to download the updates and notify to install. I edited and set it back to the default of #3

I decided to remove my choice to not have Microsoft download drivers. It has caused me occasional problems when drivers go out of date and Microsoft ends up deciding anyway. So I returned that setting to not configured which appears to mean drivers will be installed..

I'll reboot on the fantasy that this fixed it and then I'll go to tweaking.com

QUESTION: If I were to do an in-place upgrade repair install (which I don't understand how to do), I understand I wouldn't lose my data. But am I correct that I would lose all my particular configurations to all Microsoft programs? Or would it be to all programs? (even worse).

Thanks again. Some progress is definitely being made but Microsoft hasn't yet noticed -)
