    Seeking Advice Skipping 2004, Jumping to 20H2

    Windows 10 Pro - 1909, OS Build: 18363.1139

    Howdy Folks
    With all the Cumulative Update and 2004 Feature update issues I've been holding at 1909. I'm on "Pause" now and have my Group Policy Windows Update Setting at #3 - "Download and Notify for Install". Additionally, I have WUMT onboard to hide any unwanted updates, but it's not detecting anything new (I'm guessing) because of my above settings.

    I'm seeking advice on skipping the 2004 Feature update and jumping to the current 20H2. If that's a good idea, I'd appreciate learning the best way to make the move.

    Appreciation goes out to all who read this post and to those who reply.

    Cheers!

    Do you have any particular reason to think that 20H2 has some specific advantages over 2004 that would be applicable to you?

    Or is this driven by the desire to "stay current"?

    Or?

    Not sure, but I skipped v.1909 due to perceived issues and went from v.1903 to v.2004 in August with no issues. I have paused FUs on my system to make sure 20H2 is OK. I will check V.2004 CUs in December and maybe do 20H2 in Jan. or Feb. I did the v.2004 FU with WU and it went slowly, but without incident. I did have a v.1903 system image prior to clicking the “download and install” button on the WU page, just in case something went awry.

    I'd wait a little longer for the smoke to clear on 20H2.

    Even if you are keen on getting 20H2, I would advise going for 2004. The reason is that the update from 2004 to 20H2 is a minor one, a small 85KB enablement package that turns on the dormant 20H2 features that are already in 2004. This enablement package installs quickly, like a cumulative update.

    If you upgrade to 2004 then let Windows Update install the 20H2 enablement package, it can easily be unistalled in Control Panel's Installed Updates and revert you to 2004. If you upgrade directly to 20H2 the enablement package cannot be uninstalled.

    My opinion is to run the Media Creation Tool:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    Save the ISO file to your hard drive/SSD. Mount the ISO file and run setup.exe from the mounted ISO file to upgrade to 20H2. The only issue I have with 20H2 after installing on several computers is the inability to do an in-place repair install, which will be fixed by Microsoft shortly anyway.

    It's always a good idea to make a system image backup before doing any upgrade.

    @ignatzatsonic
    My primary concern now is (safely) "staying current"

    @jamis
    Good point "that maybe 20H2 needs more time to prove safe". Thanks.
    FWIW: I heard there will be no CU's in December due to many MS employees out sick with covid.
    @OldNavyGuy
    Thanks for the suggestion and link

    @Bree
    Thanks for the details, especially "If you upgrade directly to 20H2 the enablement package cannot be uninstalled."
    @NavyLCDR
    Thanks for the Media Creation Tool suggestion. With the comments above I'll likely move to 2004 first and evaluate.
    System Image Backup - Yep! Always

    Quick question to All: I'm looking for detailed instructions for using WUMT. I've passed my update pause date and it's not showing me any new available updates. Additionally, I tried to delete 3 hidden Intel driver updates (already updated via Intel's Driver & Support Assistant) - selecting the updates in WUMT the delete icon remains grayed out.

    Thanks kindly!

    Hello jdUnionngarden,
    Before you update, I would suggest making a full backup Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect.

    With a full backup image you can restore your PC back to working within 30 minutes

    I would then suggest using the ISO method to update to 2004 and make another backup if it works well for you before updating to 20H2. 20H2 breaks things for some PCs which work fine with 2004 from what I've read and experienced.

    What I did was download the Media Creation Tool, create a bootable USB, clean install Windows to get 20H2. All good, no regrets. No issues. See system specs.

    My reason for wanting 20H2... cause I wanted it.
