dalchina My Macrium Reflect free does not have the differential image feature. My images take less than ten minutes so it is not a big deal. Does Windows.old get automatically deleted after a period of time like a month? Thanks

The newer versions of Windows 10 have only 10 days.
    This can be modified.
Older Windows versions had had default 30 days.

Set Number of Days can Go Back to Previous Version of Windows

There's one way to it - via a backup job.

Free does not support incremental imaging.

Have a look at Macrium's product comparison list as to what's supported.
    Macrium Software | Product Comparision

Given a set of images, managed by Macrium's retention rules, I have the option of restoring images from a variety of dates.

    E.g.
    Base image
    diff1
    diff2
    diff3
    diff4

    gives me 5 possible dates.

Further, starting a differential image is a matter of inserting the disk, starting the program and about 3 or 4 clicks.
Further, as differential images are smaller, it's possible to have more different images on a given size of storage.
Further, should you delete your only backup image in order to create the next, then find that fails in creation, you have nothing.
Further, management of images using a base image only is something you have to do manually, whereas the program manages an image set based on retention rules.

dalchina I had not found the differential backup on my Macrium Reflect. I looked after your post and found the differential backup but the files shown under Backup Definition Files do not include the full backup on an external HD so it is puzzling what the base of the differential will be. I see a number of My Backup.XML on my C drive under Backup Definition Files. Are there options that must be selected when making the first backup that allows the differential backup to be made? Thanks

dalchina I answered my own question by Googling the Macrium Reflect Manual. I believe I understand the procedure now.
