    How to skip updates selectively

I've got Windows 10 on two computers, both currently use Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1016). I've also diddled my registry on both machines to notify me of updates, but not to automatically download and/or install them.

A couple of days ago I received notification that some 11 updates were ready for download. At the top of the list was: "Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004," which gave me such fits the first time I downloaded and tried to run it, that I want to skip this second attempt by Microsoft to modernize me. It's not that I don't want to have the latest version, but installing this Version 2004 on one computer left me unable to access my Start utility... the alphabetical listing of All Apps was obscured by an immovable black box with some random tiles on it. I rolled-back to the previous version and have resisted this update since.

Under previous versions of Windows, one was able to 'uncheck' specific updates and even hide them, but I can't find a way to do that with the version I'm running. I suppose the other ten updates could be manually downloaded from the MS site and installed independently, but is there an easier way? Many thanks.

Hi, a convenient way is to use a 3rd party tool (free) such as WUmgr (Google) or that in Option 7 of the tutorial to disable automatic updates.

These let you manually scan for updates, then hide selected updates.

Here's the less convenient MS way:

Thanks for that mention of the third-party utility; looks interesting. I have, in the meantime, discovered and run the Microsoft utility: wushowhide.diagcab, which now states that the update is hidden. However it still appears on the list of updates to download and install. I'd like someone's confirmation that, once I connect and begin the download, that one update will indeed be skipped, otherwise I'm terrified that it will install itself and necessitate a rollback to the current version I'm using. Can I expect to have the MS utility do its thing?

    UPDATE:
Like I said, I rang that MS wushowhide utility; it found Feature Update 2004, which had been listed for download. I told the utility I wanted that update hidden (and not to run), and let Windows Update do the other ten performance updates. Well, it downloaded and ran 2004 as well, and sure enough I had the problem of no All Apps menu and had to roll back to the previous version. So I'm definitely going to give that third-party utility a whirl. I sure liked Vista and Win7 better, where you could uncheck a box and the associated update would not run.

That's the last tutorial I gave you. I've not used it personally.

You could, of course, disable Windows Update and use a 3rd party tool to manually scan for updates and thus take control. See 1st tutorial.
