    Windows Update

At about 1:35 my wife's Windows 10 Pro Laptop said an update was needed. It did not finish until 508 PM Now what if she needed a a ZOOM meeting or was doing other work or things, that would have ruined her day.

I so think the Folks who work on The Windows Operating System, so need to look how the Linux Operating system, and how it does updates. Now My Daily OS is Linux Mint, and it updates work by lighting an icon on lower tool bar and you click on it an it tells you there is an update. You click Install Updates, enter your Password and updates, and while updating you can continue using your computer normally as it updates, if a restart is needed, then the update manager will tell you, but does not force you to restart. I have editing Videos and see the icon light up, i click on and get the update and minimize it and carry editing and rendering video while it is updating. You cannot do that with a windows update, it just makes your laptop a paper weight for3 1/2 hours.

Hello @Palladini and welcome to TF

Did she try using her PC while the update was installing? I can use my PCs and don't have to restart until it's convenient for me to do so.

I see it's a low spec Celeron PC with 4 GB RAM and probably with a HDD vs SSD, so that's probably a big factor in slowness here. My Core 2 Duo with HDD and 4 GB RAM finished downloading/installing 3 CU updates within 25 minutes today and then anther 5 or so it took because I chose to reboot it - no forced reboot.

This laptop did not give any option, it just shut down and restart needed for update and the only reason it was running to day, I had ZOOM meetings and I use her laptop to both keep a Bluetooth speaker charged and running for 2 hour meeting I have. The Other Laptop I use for the ZOOM meeting, It has 3 USB Ports, and I plug in 2 Cameras and a little dongle for my Wireless Keyboard, so all the USB ports on that laptop are in use. When it died, I had to go my sound setting on the laptop I was having the meetings on and send the sound to my HD TV, and me wearing a a Lavaliere on their end from it. Mic, Other folks had a ton of feed back

This can happen if your active hours are set improperly. Go into Settings, Update and Security, click on "Change active hours" and make sure they are set correctly.

I would suggest this relates to the settings about when an update (full/final/remainder) can be applied (on shutdown/restart). The update download would have finished shortly after 1.35, the 5.08pm simply relates to when the computer needs to restart to apply (the rest of) the updates.

See above replies @Ben Myers and @steve108

You can still use a computer while the update is being downloaded, and while those components of the OS that can are being updated while the computer is being used. The rest is updated on the next shutdown/restart.
