    how to get rid of windows update icon in the tray

    Greetings
    OS: windows 10 pro
    winver: 1809
    Suddenly windows update icon appeared in the tray. I don't want the next update.
    How do I kick the icon from the tray?
    which process or service I have to kill so that when I restart or shut down windows it won't try to install update?
    thank you

    @zivshosh

    I use WAU Manager
    Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    Since you're on Win 10 Pro, you could use Group Policy to do it...
    Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    If the Update(s) are already downloaded and installed, which it sounds like they might be...
    The best thing to do would be, just restart the comp, then uninstall said Update(s).

    many thanks
    disabled automatic updates in group policy editor, but it will work from now on and I still have to kick wu icon from tray.
    I used Windows Update MiniTool and it was enough for few years but I'll try WAU also
    If you can tell me which process or sevice I have to kill I'll be more than grateful

    You MAY be able to stop it by "running" (Win key + R) and typing this command:
    Code:
    net stop wuauserv && shutdown -r -t 0
    This will stop the update service and reboot the computer. This is temporary, ofc.

    As for the future...WAU Manager has a check box to stop ALL auto updates, and only check for updates when you tell it to. Then you get to choose, via check marks, which updates to install or hide.

    Group Policy Editor can block updates as well... as per the tutorial I linked.

    problem not solved
    after a while the windows update icon reappeared on the tray
    after using gpe and wau, how do I tell windows that I don't want updates (until I decide that I do want them)?
    thank you

    Set up WAU Manager, just like this...
    When you have it set, make sure to hit: Save & Apply button.

    this is exacly what O did in the first time (including save & apply)
    added to that winaero tweaker 2 check marks to disable windows update
    and finally since no updates were downloaded (hence none were installed when I restarted)
    I settled for just hiding the icon (adding TrayIconVisibility 0 in the registry, or using settings --> personalization --> icons on task bar)
    hope now the problem is solved
    I'm still convinced that there is a process or service I could kill to sove the problem more efficiently.
    thanks again
