How to stop Windows 10 2004 from auto-installing things?

Seems you're getting far more updates than the average person anyway.
The only things I am offered with updates set to Notify, and Sledgehammer in use (so I keep build 1903 for now) are offers to update to 2004, and occasional Defender security intelligence updates, and a somewhat repeating offer to update Net framework. Then there's the occasional Windows Update offer.

I let Store apps do what they want in the background, more or less.

Other than that, some 3rd party programs have their own update pattern e.g. Macrium Reflect, Roboform...

Try the one mentioned in post #4.
I'm going to try a couple of the other options first. If those don't work, I'll try yours.

I'm still wondering, in any case, why all of those other suggested gambits didn't work at all. Have they all been subverted by recent changes to Windows 10, do you know?

I don't know. Perhaps the reigning champion knows.

The only obvious difference is the use of 2004... of which neither of us has experience?

It's weird, I haven't installed any of my own apps yet. These were all updates to things I either hadn't installed drivers or apps for, or things related to the motherboard drivers and apps I installed before I connected to the network. Very odd.

Ahhhh! Okay, I thought most people 'round here had updated to the latest version (2004).

Am I mistaken in that? Have most people here - to your knowledge anyway - avoided that? I know there have been lots of posts around the web about how to NOT install it. Do you happen to know if that is due to these annoyances? I thought most people were avoiding it due to bugs it contained?

I do not install version 2004, waiting for M$ to compromise my OS.

How would installing version 2004 lead to MS compromising your OS?

Also, another update - I just tried Wu10Man, Sledgehammer and WAU Manager.

Wu10Man says it doesn't work anymore on Windows 10 2004.

Sledgehammer appeared to work, but I'm a but concerned about the interface - does it have high marks among users here?

WAU Manager, despite SEEMING like it should work, didn't work at all. I enabled it, rebooted Windows, checked that it was still enabled, plugged in the network, and all the Store and Windows Update updates started piling in anyway.

Is WAU Manager known not to work in Windows 10 2004?

I'm thinking the "Metered Connections" thing might be the best option.

Matthew - I'd like to try your solution, but it looks like I have to do a bunch of things to get it to work, instead of a simple app like the others. Am I mistaken in that appraisal?

If M$ wants to install it without my permission, it firstly has to compromise my OS, which has been protected by the said scripts.

Yes, you are mistaken. The scripts are very easy to use and even simpler than those simple apps.

Ok, thanks! Have other users confirmed that your stuff works to prevent auto updates on v. 2004 as well?

I would advise you not to try to run multiple means of blocking updates simultaneously, and not to change from one to another without taking great care over the transition.

Sledgehammer is a more basic script -the GUI is functional, minimalistic. There is no need to think it is functionally deficient on aesthetic grounds. It incorporates other such tools.
    Download Sledgehammer 2.7.2

WAU looks a lot more polished, covers the same ground.

all the Store and Windows Update updates
    - I think it's been pointed out to you that Store updates and Windows updates are two separate things.

I think I quoted the tutorial about Store updates near the start of this. I personally wouldn't choose to disable that if using any.

I chose not to upgrade to 1909 as, having tried it, MS had badly broken Windows search (file explorer). That took them some updates to fix. Further, I'm waiting for a particular program to be updated for compatibility with late versions fo 1909 and 2004. Plus waiting for all the issues reported to be resolved.

Soon 20H2 (2009) will be here- a minor update akin to 1909. Nothing significant. I hope.
