I have a message saying "you have an update for your machine but we`re not quite ready we will try again later"The update
is the same KB4571756 and looking in the update history it has failed to install each day this week Mon-Thurs.with an error code Oxc1900401.Is there a way to stop it re-trying?

With Home version, you can delay the update for 35 days.

    Settings/Update and Security/Windows Update/Advanced Options/Pause Updates

I was one of the unlocking ones that ended up with the KB4571756 loopity loop and wasn't able to install. Fortunately I have Pro and was able to use Microsofts Show/Hide Update tool !

Installed on my Z170 W10 Pro 2004 test system no problem, on 9/12/20

You can also start using Windows Automatic Update Manager.

Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    Option 7

Sorry, perhaps my post was a bit confusing.Bottom line is that
I DON`T want to install this update as it was already installed
on Wednesday 16-9-20 but has failed to install 13 times since.
It looks to me as if I might be in that loopity loop that BubbaW
    experienced.

I understand you want to hide (block) the update. @AddRAM pointed you to Option 7 in a tutorial- a free program.

If you care to look at that you will see this:
    Failed to install update-1.png
    - a list of updates after the program scans for updates.. if you select the one of interest, then click Hide on the right it should be blocked.

Windows Update Manager (WUmgr) (free) can also do this.

A less convenient method is this:
Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10
