Windows 10 has been updated even when WU is disabled

    Hello,

I have Windows 10 Home Edition 1903 and disabled Windows Update service. I have also these keys in registry:

Windows 10 has been updated even when it is disabled-wu-2.png

However, I noticed that system was rebooted yesterday. By seeing the event log, I found that these updates were applied:

Windows 10 has been updated even when it is disabled-wu-1.png

How could this be possible? How can I disable updates completely?

I have seen that windows updates are being checked regularly.

    Can you help me, please?

    Regards
    Jaime

    Jaime,

There are lots of different opinions about how best to stop WU.

This is what I do and it works [and has been working for several years now] - My scheme for managing WU [my post #73] - TenForums

You'll also see other ideas discussed in that thread and in the relevant tutorial.

I also have Windows 10 Home Version 1903, and I have never disabled the Windows Update service. Fortunately, no updates have been installed without my permission. I have used the following method:

So far, I have only manually installed the following update:

Several freeware options that kill W Update have been around for some years. One newer one is mentioned in the tutorial Try3 posted. (Option 7)

Good tools also allow Defender to update and give you the option of manually scanning and selecting updates.

It takes more than something trivial as you have done to deter MS.

And you could try using Windows Update Manager, it disables windows automatic updates and lets you scan for and install the updates that you want to.

I also use WAU Manager. Works fine, simple to use... (Option 7)

I was on v1903 for a long time after WU forced v.1909 on my system twice with failures. All I did was pause WU from the WU page in Settings. My system had some sort of bug in that I could simply click the pause button on the WU page as often as I wanted and it would push the resume date out 7 days at a time. I finally resumed WU and let it update to v.2004 which took 4 1/2 hours, but accomplished the update without issues. Now, using the Pause button on the WU page in Settings, I have WU paused until 12/22/2020. It was set at 12/08/2020, but I just did a double click of the Pause button to 12/22/2020. l have had no updates downloaded while WU was paused (as I think it's supposed to work). I always do a system image prior to resuming WU.

Feature updates should no longer be forced on people - opt-in according to MS- until end of service life of your current build.

    That's what MS claims...

As we've said above, the means for full control of Windows Updates are and have been available for some years, even for Home users. Older trivial means of trying to block updates are not reliable.
