windows update to 1909 loses healthy disk

    Greetings
I waited for a very long time to (years!) update from 1809 to 1909.
I even asked in this form why the offer to update to 1909 doesn't come normally, and the explanation was that some programs on my pc were incompatible with 1909.
Yesterday it finally came only to discover that my 6TB disk (my 3rd disk) was missing.
Control panel administrative tools declared it to be uninitialized and suggested initialization by MBR and GPT.
As I remembered I used GPT but choosing this option yielded another window that GPT was not recognized by windows.
I don't know if things got better in 2004, but I'm surprised.
I'm not sure if initializing is harmless or I lose all my data, anyway it is not normal, since I rolled back to 1809 where this 6TB disk is regarded in administrative tools as NTFS healthy.
Any harmless solution that won't result in losing my data on the 6TB disk?
besides icons on tray and quick link became too small for me. This should be easier but I couldn't find it in settings of taskbar
    thank you

Hi, suggest you start with a disk check (on all disks) just to be sure.
Download install and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and review what it says right on its GUI for each disk in your PC.
    - this program gives the most helpful instant analysis of any I know.

There are threads here dealing with instances of disks appearing in RAW format after an upgrade. Feel free to research those, if that's what you saw.

Post a screenshot of your disks using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard, making sure all text in all columns is visible, thus:
windows update to 1909 loses healthy disk-screenshot-copy1.png

Do you have a backup of that disk?

What is the full make/model of your PC or MBO and graphics card?

besides icons on tray and quick link became too small for me.
    - not what I'd expect. Perhaps a problem with your graphics driver after the upgrade, or inappropriate scaling factor?

update to 1909 loses healthy disk

thank you for your prompt answer
I'm not familiar with the sentinel but will do as you suggest
I just hope it won't do anything without asking me.
This 6TB contains music. excerpts from my disk library and internet sources like youtube etc.
Hence I address it all the time and it never gave me any trouble.
it does not have a backup yet.
I don't remember if I used minitools partition wizard anyway I don't understand why a move from 1809 to 1909 will need initialization I have 2 and 3TB disks that remained as they were in 1809 but they were formatted normally as NTFS

Example thread about disk becoming RAW with thread found pointing to resolution:
Update to Windows 10, version 1803 erase my HDD

Please note that again and again the routine and regular use of disk imaging (e.g. base image + differentials - smaller, faster) to large external storage first of all Windows partitions, then of any other disks or partitions is strongly recommended, permitting fast recovery without technical help even if a disk has to be replaced or Windows becomes unusable or non-recoverable.

    E.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid).

at last I ran Sentinel and I can't figure out what is so wrong with my 6TB except its partition style GPT which is not standard
but I cannot do anything without losing my data
    attached sentinel report
Is there anything I can do to receive windows updates without jeoperdizing this 6TB disk?
windows update to 1909 loses healthy disk-6tb.jpg

    - - - Updated - - -

after updating to winver 1909 the 6TB disk did not become raw but appeared as unallocated
Luckily I use Macrium, so I went back to winver 1809 and the disk looks normal again
why should 1909 see this disk in a diffrent way? it is still NTFS
    thank you

Hi, please post two screeshots. 1 like this for that 6Tb disk:
windows update to 1909 loses healthy disk-1.png

and one using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard. Thanks.

The screenshot you posted appears to be for what should be a 3Tb disk
Western Digital WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0 3TB DCM: EBRCHVJMAB: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

    from the model number:
    WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0

If so, the total space shown makes no obvious sense to me.

I thought you were concerned about a

    6TB disk

Your HD Sentinel screenshot focusses on a SSD.

I: appears to be a 6TB disk. It appears to be GPT which is appropriate.

You are right. I am worried about drive I, the 6TB WD disk which is a GPT partition.
The Funny thing is that my second disk which is 3TB divided into 4 partitions: D E F G was also GPT and after update to winver 1909 it was as it should, i.e. all partitions were readable but drive I was unallocated!
so it is not the GPT partition that makes the difference.
So what can I do to receive updates?
suppose I backup I on some external than it must also be GPT due to its 6TB volume and than I can format I to whatever 1909 will like but the external backup would be unallocated and I lose my data again.
and if I backup I as an image than the image could not be restored in 1909
perhaps I should jump to higher update?
    thank you

There are various reports of disks becoming inaccessaible after upgrading to 1909 e.g. (random example)
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...2-e042c8614ed5

    Some sites offer general approaches:
Fixed: Hard Drives Missing After Windows 10 Update - EaseUS

I don't recall having read a case specifically like yours, but I don't read all posts... so there my be something close to your experience somewhere on tenforums.

If this had been more common I'd have thought someone else might have commented.

Is there any reason whay you chose 1909 which is approaching end of life?

20H2 is the latest, 2004 being the next major upgrade.

Driver versions can change with build upgrades- might be related.
