Why do updates take so long to complete

Catching up with updates on some of my machines today. Gone are the days when windows 7 updates used to sail through with little problems to follow.
Today, I am waiting for the installing of KB4566782 to complete. after 2 hours it has reached 75% (just gone to 76%). I am intrigued! (just leaped to 90%) Almost there it would seem

It can be a pain it gets to do it in the background so if your using the PC it waits for CPU time the working hours also affect it as well it would be better if you could download an exe and install when you want

This latest update that allows you to upgrade all your drivers via PC Settings >Update took the longest of any Windows 10 update so far. It took an hour and 10 minutes and restarted multiple times before finishing. It was like installing Windows 10 for the first time, only it took longer!!! Wow. Everything working fine tho.

Unplug Router network cable - wait a bit

Hi, I previously solved this exact type of a hanging problem many times by unplugging the router to PC network cable for 1 minute, then replug it, wait a bit, and soon it will continiue the dounload and finish. See if it still works. open taskmanager properties and watch Network activity. I reported on this then.

Note:I then accidently noticed this trying to solve it.

Wow, that's odd. Other than feature updates, I don't think that I have EVER had a Windows 10 update take more than maybe 10 minutes, and usually a good bit less than that. That includes my slow 10 year old system.

But then again, all of my machines are pretty well optimized.

In your case it can also be down to the computer's hardware. I note that you have 4gb of RAM which is not very much so there will be a lot of swapping to hard drive. And then there is your slow hard drive. Think about getting an SSD, it will speed things up no end.

Mine is an Acer Aspire with a Ryzen 3 3200 cpu and 8GB ram, SSD and bought one year ago. I didn't check my WIFI's speed but am sure it was fairly fast. It was the time installing after downloading that took quite a while. I was really surprised to see "Your PC will restart multiple times during install." Never seen that except when installing a Windows OS for the first time. This of course might have been due to windows instantly updating drivers such as my AMD video driver and needing to restart. Nevertheless, the upgrade install part took forever. And yes, previous upgrades took only 10 minutes or so.

Installing? This is not normal. CUs should not take 2 hours to install, but your PC is aging though. Definitely consider upgrading to a SSD like swarfega mentioned. And Feature Updates takes longer to process.

It takes no more than 10 minutes to install a CU on my HDD with 6 GB of RAM.

In my case, the only thing different this time was that I didn't get alerted to this upgrade via a notification on my taskbar. That's when it usually takes about 10 minutes. Rather, I went into my PC settings and clicked on "Check for Updates." I'm somewhat surprised that others didn't mention the multiple restarts while installing this update. I'm thinking this was a more involved update/upgrade than previous ones. To be clear, this recent update/upgrade is the one where you can now go to PC Settings - Check for Updates and have any new drivers installed without having to go into File Manager and click on a that device and click Update Driver. Also, this recent upgrade is significantly different in that shortly after the install, you get messages like "Get Ready For More Secure Internet" and "Almost Done." Noone else saw these? I'm thinking this is a more involved update/upgrade than the usual ones.

PS. This appears to be an upgrade, not an update. That's why it took so long.
