Stuck on "Undoing changes made to your computer" after Windows Update

Windows Update prompted me to clear some space off my drive and once I was able to it prompted me to start the update. I scheduled it for around 12 pm yesterday and it started without any issues. At one point, however it became stuck on a black screen with a circle of loading dots that read "Undoing changes made to your computer...".

I have tried multiple troubleshoots such as holding down the power button to shut it off as well as holding the volume keys (both, or one at a time) along with the power button. I have turned it off and on multiple times to try and get it to boot into safe mode and all it does it flash the Surface logo with the loading circles before going black, flashing some white bordered square, and then goes directly back to the screen that first says "Attempting to recover installation" and then "Undoing changes made to your computer" where it then stays. It refreshes itself every few minutes but just repeats the same thing over and over.

As of now I have left it on overnight and returned to find it not changed. The only thing that changed was that during one of the troubleshooting attempts the first screen with the Surface logo became red in the background and has stayed that way since.

If possible I would like to know if there is a way to fix this without having to fully wipe the tablet as I have a lot stored on there and haven't made a backup for it.

    Windows Version: Windows 10

    Thank you

It sounds as if it's a failed feature update, and could have failed for a number of reasons, but could still be lack of space.
That's a typical problem with devices with limited storage (which is what I presume is the case for your tablet- you don't say if has e.g. 32Gb, 64Gb...)

    A feature upgrade
a: downloads a very large amount of data
    b. createst Windows.old- about the same size as your exisiting Windows folder

Sometimes 30Gb free space isn't enough.

If you haven't been using disk imaging routinely and regularly as is so, so often recommended here so you both have a full backup and can restore your device to a previous good state without help, then probably your only way forward is to recover data and clean install.

Consider then not allowing a feature update using 3rd party tools as necessary. Tutorial available.

Normally with a PC I'd suggest using a live boot disk (download iso, create bootable disk), boot the PC from that into a familiar Win 10 environment so you can access the internal disk, and thus copy it off. This is a tablet so am unsure if that's an easy option.

Sorry, the specs of the tablet were listed under the "my computers thing". The tablet is 128GB but I don't recall exactly how much space was available at the time of the update as I cleared enough so that the update menu said it was good to go. I also have a micro SD card inserted into the tablet but I am unsure if that was being used or not.

    Ah Memory is normally RAM...

Again consider using a live boot disk e.g. Kyhi's, Bob Omb's (Google).

(There are threads here covering ways to upgrade tablets with limited space making use of external storage to download an iso file. Also an extensive tutorial on clearing space on C: )
