How to fix MS Windows 10 mandatory June 2020 updates...

While Windows AI kept me from posting this to their forum, I just wanted to say "thanks" the Microsoft update team... for the involuntarily installed June 2020 Windows 10 update.

If you think that my "thanks" is rooted in sarcasm (as the update was shoved down my throat), that's only partly true. And if you think that I'm just here to rant about their Russian-roulette suicide-style updates another time, think again. Think long and hard. I'm not here to complain, I'm here to brag about my new relationship with Microsoft and Windows. How so?

Recently, the June 2020 Windows 10 update caused not only a loss of the ability to print on at least two of my network printers, and it's also caused BSOD and diagnostic hassles since. I don't feel I need to go far out of my way to substantiate this claim, as others have done it for me. Windows 10 printing breaks due to Microsoft June 2020 updates As of August, the auto-updates didn't seem to repair anything (and they couldn't be uninstalled), so the solution to my problem became obvious. 1903 is the version I'm now running.

So that you are aware, I wrote to the MS forum several times before (many months back) complaining about Microsoft's forced updates and made a case against such policy. But they wouldn't listen to me as a customer. They seemed intent on dismissing my views and delegitimizing my inconvenience in spite of Microsoft update team technical problems. It's fitting that Microsoft no longer considers "Windows 10" to be an operating system, but rather a "service" that Microsoft as a provider is entitled to regulate from afar. Microsoft is, of course, entitled to its opinions, and can run its business apart from customer preferences as it sees fit.

That being said, I'm writing this email not in rage, but rather in CELEBRATION, letting the world know that they have finally done it... they pushed me over the edge. Congratulations, Microsoft. As a loyal MS user since the days MS-DOS v5, this June 2020 update was the straw that finally broke the came's back. I will finally be installing Linux on all of my machines. And I will become a Linux evangelist, no longer held hostage by COVIDIOTS propping up Bill Gates' influence and vax propaganda. There may be a learning curve and it will take me time to set up and figure out the new OS, but I will be able to sleep peacefully at night that I'll never be victim to their inconsiderate and abusive update policies again. Ever. Join me in switching to Linux and in liberating yourself from such a manipulative platform run by such a morally maligned company.

If one is set on Linux the DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. site can be visited to choose a download of an .iso file used to create the LiveDVD. That disc can be booted and test/try a version or dozen of the choices available. Coming from Windows a good one to start with is Linux Mint but there's also Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, and more 'flavors'. One can also install from that disc and has sufficient programs to get a good start, learning the Terminal [similar to Command Prompt] will take more learning but fortunately a large number of programs are available that are easy to install using Software Manager. Just like Windows there are updates but never forced, just open Update Manager when you want. Linux Mint 20 shows an icon near the clock when there's updates available.

Andrew, welcome to the dark side. I joined it more than 20 years ago. Sure I still use Windows for some things but Linux is my go-to OS. Berton gave you good advice about live disc/USB to try different distributions. After using around six I settled on Linux Mint.

    Windows 10 Home 1909

Only recently started using Windows 10 on my new laptop.
The worst part so far for me is constantly thinking about updates. I don't want 2004!
So I've installed 'Windows Updates Blocker' but ofcoarse that stops 'Security Intelligence' from updating.
I get round that by unblocking it once a day to do a quick update, not knowing if an Windows update has started in the background.
If Windows was free it would be something I would have to put up with I guess, including them trying to get so much information from every user (which is rediculous), but it isn't.

I have Linux Mint 19.3 on an old laptop and I do like it but it does take a bit of getting used to.
The last few days I thought I should have tried Linux instead of Windows 10.

If this is how Windows is going to be from now on the future does not look good.

As of Windows 10 1903, Feature updates (such as 2004) are no longer force installed when they are released.

    Installation is optional.

Look in to using the free tool Windows Automatic Updates Manager.

    WAU Manager.

It allows you to decide what and when updates are installed, and does not block Defender updates.

We use it on all of our systems...with no issues.

That said, it's always prudent to do frequent disk image backups, in case anything goes wrong on your system.

OK, one more time. I used Windows Update to pause updates out to 10/15/2020. I wait until the monthly “B” cycle update is deemed OK by the members here and then I do a system image. Then I unpause WU and let it do its thing. After the update is done, I use WU to pause updates for a few months again. Currently, MS says v.2004 isn’t ready for my system, so with WU paused and a current system image on a separate HD, I feel safe.

Using WAU Manager now. It's great. Thanks for the link, I hadn't heard of it before.

Once I get some money in my Paypal account, I will be sending an amount to the developers.
