    Version 2004 update problem

I have successfully updated a laptop and a desktop from version 1909 to version 2004 with very little difficulty. A second laptop, not so much. When I tried about two months ago it took forever to go through the steps to no avail and no update. I left it alone until recently when I got the message that updates were available. So, I started the process. It took the "getting ready" process about and hour. Then "installing" took four more hours just o tell me it failed gain to update. What gives? What am I doing wrong with this particular laptop?

Thank you. Yes, I have read the suggested page. But, I see nothing there that clarifies or explains my issue.

I would suggest doing a repair install using an in-place upgrade on the problematic laptop before attempting to upgrade it to 2004 again.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

If you don't have the 1909 ISO, you can get it either by using Rufus, or from the Heidoc and TechBench sites.

Rufus - The Official Website (Download, New Releases)

Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

I would also use the Media Creation Tool instead of Windows Update to download and install 2004.

Failing all that, see this article by Ed Bott on tools to use for troubleshooting upgrade failures -

Most likely nothing. Join the queue of those of us (many) who have tried every method of update and every suggested fix and still cannot update to 2004.

Hi, upgrade errors can be next to impossible to resolve.

Note the exact error message, then search using that.

Feel free to inspect the Windows update logs and see if you can make anything of them.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...sion-of-window

Look at the relevant section in the tutorial on upgrading to Win 10 about resolving errors, and follow the links there to discover more.

    Try upgrading after
    - disabling or uninstalling any 3rd party security programs
    - removing any unncessary hardware
    - having only your system disk in place
    - check your partition structure - sometimes the error message will point to parititon size issues.
    - ensure you have at least 30Gb free on C:
    - try a clean boot
    - try downloading the iso file, and upgrading using that, without accepting updates during the upgrade.

Don't be in any hurry to upgrade to 2004. tenforums members identified another (minor) bug last night related to the Start Menu remaining open. Others I can think of: some have no networking in Safe Mode with Networking; the well-known SSD trim bug.

I had 2 stubborn 1909 systems that refused to even have it offered. No "It's coming", nothing. The method in post #4, half hour or so depending on your machine, solved it in both cases. It cleared out the cobwebs and the update was offered. I chose to do it the WU method, but that part is up to you.

Your situation is not exactly the same as mine (doubt any 2 are), but this worked for me.

Look at this post by @OldNavyGuy and read up on the Repair.

Thanks everybody. I used the Microsoft Windows Install assistant and it seems to have installed and things are OK, so far. There is one issue. When I went to "View update history" there is no information. Is that a concern?

Glad yours worked. My situation: Last month when 2004 was offered it installed on all machines except one, it failed several times. I watched as the 2004 update came and went and came back to WU so about one month later I tried again and this time it upgraded.

Pretty sure that is normal when a new version is installed.

Sorry for late reply, just saw it.

No, not a concern. Only WU (Windows Update) will log it under your history. Under the covers, the Assistant is basically doing what an update from an ISO would do, just more automatically and hands-free for you.
